DETROIT -- Eric Haase hit his 18th home run of the season but the Detroit Tigers could muster little more in a 5-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles Saturday night at Comerica Park.

The Tigers (50-57) finished the month of July with a 14-12 record, after going 14-13 in May and June.

Haase hit a solo home run to left field in the fourth inning off Orioles starter John Means. The Detroit-area native now has a team-high 18 home runs.

Other than that, Means had few problems in six innings of work, allowing just four hits and one walk, while striking out six.

Tigers starter Matt Manning got into trouble in the sixth inning, walking two batters to load the bases with one out. But he got Pedro Severino to pop out and Maikel Franco to hit into what appeared to be an inning-ending grounder to shortstop Zack Short.

But second baseman Willi Castro couldn’t handle Short’s throw. The error prolonged the inning and led to three unearned runs.

“We didn’t do enough to win the game is the bottom line,” said Tigers manager A.J. Hinch. “We had a lot of empty at-bats early in the game and then a critical mistake following a couple of walks. You do that and put yourself in a hole and it’s not easy to come back.”

The Tigers loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning when Orioles reliever Tanner Scott walked two batters and hit another.

Baltimore then turned to right-hander Cole Sulser, prompting the Tigers to counter with pinch-hitter Akil Baddoo, a left-hander.

The showdown set up a brief moment of suspense, as the 25,132 fans in attendance stood and cheered. Baddoo scored a run on a ground out, but Sulser struck out Derek Hill and Jonathan Schoop to end the game.

Miguel Cabrera’s single to lead off the second inning was the 2,942nd hit of his career. That’s one shy of Frank Robinson for 36th place on the all-time list. It was also Cabrera’s 2100th hit as a Tiger.

Up next: The Tigers and Orioles wrap up their four-game series on Sunday at 1:10 p.m. Tigers lefty Tyler Alexander (1-1 4.80 ERA) will face Baltimore right-hander Spenser Watkins (2-1, 3.10).
