Elon, N.C. – The Elon University football team took part in its first intrasquad scrimmage of the fall Saturday, showing promise on both sides of the football.
With the first units on the field, Elon's offense was able to move the chains but the defense was able to get off the field without allowing points. The best offensive drive of the game came on the second possession as quarterback JR Martin was able to lead the team on a 10-play, 65-yard scoring drive.
"We came out today and the enthusiasm was good, and there was some physicality on both sides of the ball," head coach Tony Trisciani said. "When you scrimmage, you don't want to have a shutout and you don't want to light the scoreboard up. You want to be balanced and I felt that's where we were. Defensively, we did a pretty good job against the run and the defensive front was disruptive. Offensively, we were able to find some rhythm and sustain some drives."
Martin led Elon on that scoring drive by going 3-for-5 for 51 yards. Freshman Malik Griffin capped the drive with a six-yard run to paydirt. Elon scored later in the scrimmage when quarterback Justin Allen went 4-for-4 for 50 yards, finding Jordan Bonner on a 22-yard strike.
Although the No. 1 offense did not score during the controlled scrimmage, senior quarterback Davis Cheek had rhythm and was 5-for-9 (to five different receivers) over three possessions. Defensively, the line kept Elon's running game from any explosive plays and freshman Chase Speicher had a beautiful interception for the only turnover of the contest.
Elon will have one more intrasquad scrimmage in a week before opening the regular season Sept. 4 at home against Wofford at 2:00 p.m. The Phoenix will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Rhodes Stadium during that contest. Fans can purchase season tickets today by CLICKING HERE.
