KENNESAW, Ga. - The Kennesaw State women's soccer team returned to Fifth Third Bank Stadium on Sunday afternoon, losing to UAB for the first time in the program's history.
The matchup between the two southeast teams began as another midfield battle for the Owls.
Torrential downpour descended onto the Fifth Third Bank Stadium pitch, but play continued until a lightning strike lit up the blue and gray skies overhead.
A delay was put into place, but the game was able to restart after a minimal delay of 30 minutes.
Right after the teams retook the field, the Owls recorded their best chance of the half as Aila Swinton placed a shot right over the Blazers' crossbar.
While Kennesaw State was able to convert its first chance since the restart, UAB progressed well up the field from their goal kick; just a little over a minute after Swinton's opportunity, a flick from Birmingham, Ala. native Ava Martin put the Blazers 1-0 up.
UAB doubled its lead from a penalty shot, but the Owls were able to put together their most fluid play after being two goals down.
Breon Grant was substituted into the match and one of her first actions was winning a corner after carrying the ball up the length of the pitch. A dangerous corner was put in and chaos ensued in the Blazer's box until junior forward Erin Miller pounced on the loose ball. Not only was the breakthrough the first goal of the Owls' season, but it was the first in Millers' collegiate career.
Kennesaw State continued to apply pressure for the remainder of the fixture but were unable to find an equalizer. The final whistle blew with the scoreline favoring UAB two goals to one.
The Owls continue to look for their first win of the season and will hope to find Thursday, Aug. 26 against the College of Charleston at 6 p.m.
