COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Richmond soccer team netted its first goal of the season in the first half of Thursday's match against the Maryland Terrapins in College Park. The Spiders struck first in the eighth minute of action, scoring the first goal of the season and taking the early lead off of the head of Jessie Prillaman (Mongolia, Del.). The Spider defense held strong, but a couple unlucky chances sank the Spiders' effort in the second half as Richmond fell 2-1. The Spiders are now 0-2 on the season, while Maryland improves to 3-0.

"I'm really proud of how our players responded from our last game." Said head coach Marty Beall, "They had a great mindset in training leading up to tonight's game. I'm also proud of how well we played tonight. Even though the result isn't what we felt we deserved, we took a huge step forward against a very athletic Big Ten squad."

Seven Spiders recorded a shot in the contest, as Prillaman, Emma Coleman (Vienna, Va.) and Caroline Lydecker's (Ormond Beach, Fla.) attempts were all on frame. Taylor Montague (Durham, N.C.) got the start at goalkeeper, playing the first 45 minutes, recording a save. Claire Hinkle (Tipp City, Ohio) played the final 45, suffering her second loss of the season.

Prillaman scored the first goal of the match, finding the back of the net in the eighth minute of action. After Emma Kennedy's (Blacksburg, Va.) long throw in bounced in front of the net, Prillaman elevated and knocked the ball into the upper right corner for her first goal of her career.

Maryland tied it up in the 69th minute. Adalee Broadbent dribbled through the top level of the Spider defense and fired a shot beyond the 18-yard box that was over the Spider keeper's head to knot the match at one each.

Just four minutes later, Maryland took the lead. After the Spider goalkeeper was called for a foul in the 18-yard box, the Terrapins were awarded a penalty kick. Catherine DeRosa fired a shot inside the right post to take the 2-1 advantage.

Richmond saw a quality chance on a free kick with less than two minutes remaining, but the header attempt went over the crossbar as the Terrapins hung on to their slim advantage.

The Spiders are back in action on Sunday as they open the home schedule against the Longwood Lancers at 4 p.m.
