On Friday, the New York Mets landed erstwhile Chicago Cubs shortstop Javier Báez in the three-player trade right before the deadline. Francisco Lindor, Báez's good friend, is currently on the injured list, so Báez will play shortstop for the time being. He'll presumably slide over to second base when Lindor returns.

Báez made his Mets debut as the cleanup hitter Saturday night (GameTracker) and wasted no time making an impact. He received a big ovation prior to his first at-bat, then swatted a long two-run home run against Reds lefty Wade Miley in the sixth inning. Here's the video:

The Citi Field crowd gave Báez another ovation after the home run and he eventually popped out of the dugout for a curtain call. He is the 30th player in Mets history to hit a home run in his first game with the team and the first since Aaron Altherr in 2019.

Báez, 28, joins the Mets after hitting .248/.292/.484 with 22 home runs in 91 games with the Cubs. He is scheduled to become a free agent after the season, and you can't rule out a long-term deal with the Mets given his friendship with Lindor and owner Steve Cohen's deep pockets

Anthony Rizzo, Báez's longtime teammate with the Cubs, went deep in his first game with the Yankees on Friday.
