Post-Practice Interviews: Coach Creighton | Coach Neathery
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – With not a cloud in the sky and the sun shining brightly, the Eastern Michigan University football team was back inside Rynearson Stadium today, Aug. 14, for its first team scrimmage of the fall 2021 campaign.
Broken into offensive and defensive sidelines, the units clashed in a full-pad affair that included certified NCAA officials and multiple sets of live, game-style football. With modifications in place, such as making all quarterback contact illegal and eliminating the use of certain types of blocks, the squads competed for the majority of the allotted practice time. The Eagles' special teams units also saw plenty of action, mainly in-between sets of live play.
Associate Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator Neal Neathery, speaking after the scrimmage, noted his unit's impressive hunger for improvement.
"These guys work hard. They work hard at things off the field, spend a lot of time watching film, and they're eager to get better," noted Neathery. "From that standpoint, I think this group is outstanding."
Going against Neathery's defense today was eighth year Head Coach Chris Creighton, who stepped into the play calling role for the EMU offense during the 2020 season. He spoke highly of his team's overall improvement, especially in the quarterback room.
"We're better than we were," said Creighton. "They all (quarterbacks) got to play today, which is good. We'll meet here in a few hours to after we go through the film and see if they made the right checks and ran the right plays…and all of that, but we're better than we were last year, and we're excited about that."
While both coaches noted the focus and improvements that will still be expected in the weeks to come, there was no doubt that the energy was high and that the players were excited to be playing game-like football today at The Factory.
