THESSALONIKI -- The level of the viral load in Thessaloniki's wastewater appears to be stabilising during the current week, according to measurements taken by the Sewage Epidemiology Team of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) with EYATH, in collaboration with the Region of Central Macedonia and in the framework of the National Public Health Organisation (NPHO) network.
Specifically the measurements on Monday and Tuesday, March 15-16 were up 2 percent in comparison with the average rate of the two previous measurements, namely Friday and Sunday, March 12 and 14, and 41 percent down from the average value a week earlier, on Monday and Tuesday, March 8-9.
"Despite the average weekly increase in the viral load in the last two weeks, the two latest measurements this week show a partial de-escalation or stabilisation trend," AUTH rector and head of the research team, Professor Nikos Papaioannou, stated to Athens - Macedonian News Agency (ANA). He underlined, however, that the viral load is still high and that this was troubling, given that the city was in a lockdown. "We are at a crucial point and, if we are not careful, we could easily reach emergency levels very soon, as the gradual increase in the viral load has started putting pressure on the city's hospitals," he said.
