CONWAY, Ark.: The University of Central Arkansas volleyball program takes its first step into the postseason with the Southland Tournament tomorrow.
The Sugar Bears venture towards their ultimate goal of winning a conference championship as they face Abilene Christian to start the SLC Tournament in Corpus Christi.
UCA begins the hunt for conference gold as they start with the Wildcats tomorrow afternoon. Once the first serve happens, it will be less than 11 days since the Sugar Bears faced ACU in regular-season competition. In that contest, UCA dominated as they made quick work of the Wildcats in a 3-0 victory. Leading it in that match was junior Madi Bowles, as she found all of her corners with 16 kills on a .424 hitting percentage. Since that point, things haven't got much better for ACU as they dropped both of the following two contests against Houston Baptist and Sam Houston. It has been the opposite for the Sugar Bears as they dominated Nicholls and made a massive upset in the regular-season finale as they bested Southeastern Louisiana 3-1.
In both of those matches, UCA had major help from their two third-team all-conference honorees, seniors Emily Doss and Bailey Waddington. Doss and Waddington have been two key contributors all year as they both stand at the top of the league for their respected categories. Doss currently claims the third-ranking for digs per set with 5.12. Waddington also claims the third-ranking, but for assists per set with 7.90. Waddington will also have something to achieve during this tournament as she is only 53 assists away from 2,000 in her career.
From ACU's perspective, they want to forget the end of the season and switch the gear for postseason play. The Wildcats are led by their first-team all-conference senior, OH Kate Mueller. Mueller ranked fourth in the SLC with 3.96 kills per set and ranked third in points per set with 4.47. That will be a player to watch as the Sugar Bears look to contain ACU's offensive attack. That will be an interesting matchup as UCA ranks third in digs, while the Wildcats are seventh in hitting percentage and ninth in kills.
The two will meet for the first round of the SLC Tournament at 4 p.m. tomorrow in Corpus Christi, Texas. The winner of this matchup will face SLU in the second round of the tournament Thursday.
