SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The No. 6-seeded and No. 16-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team upset No. 3-seeded and No. 13-ranked Tennessee, 70-55, Tuesday evening (March 23) at the Alamodome and will make its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
The Wolverines held Tennessee (18-7) to 19 first half points -- its lowest total of the season -- and just seven in the second quarter. Meanwhile, Michigan used a 20-5 run over the course of the second and third quarters to extend a lead it never relinquished.
Michigan (16-5) built up a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter and held on for the win despite a scoring droughts of more than three minutes.
The dynamic junior duo of Naz Hillmon and Leigha Brown led the U-M. Hillmon recorded her 29th career double-double (17 points, 15 rebounds) and Brown had a team-best 23 points to go along with three rebounds, three steals and a team-best five assists.
Senior Hailey Brown also recorded a double-digit outing with 14 points, including four three-pointers, while junior Danielle Rauch was all over the floor with a career-high six rebounds and five steals. Graduate student Akienreh Johnson added eight boards and six points, while Maddie Nolan hit a clutch three -pointer down the stretch.
Michigan and Tennessee played a tightly-contested first quarter with the Wolverines taking an 11-10 lead with 2:39 left on a Leigha Brown make before the Lady Vols regained a one-point advantage with a second-chance layup with just over a minute to play. Hailey Brown hit a clutch triple off a pass from Hillmon to put the Maize and Blue ahead, 14-12, heading into the second quarter.
The Wolverine defense put Tennessee on a two-minute scoring drought to go up, 21-16, before a made layup cut into the U-M lead with 5:19 left in the first half. Coming out of the media break, both teams struggled to find a basket before Hailey Brown made a jump shot to end the scoring drought.
Michigan kept Tennessee to just 1-for-10 shooting in the final 5:17 and did not give up a field goal to head into the locker room leading, 28-19. Hailey Brown dropped three treys in the first half and had a team-best 11 points, while Hillmon had eight points and seven rebounds. Rauch added five boards, two assists and two steals.
The Wolverines hit their first three shots coming out of the halftime break to go up, 36-21, when Leigha Brown took the ball coast-to-coast off a steal with 7:47 left in the third quarter. U-M continued to build on its lead with four straight points to add to a 20-5 run over the course of 11 minutes to take a 40-23 advantage over Tennessee.
Michigan used a three-pointer from Nolan in its final possession of the third quarter to go up, 50-35, heading into the final quarter.
Rauch hit a key three-pointer with 4:34 remaining to help Michigan maintain a double-digit lead, 57-44, and Hailey Brown followed it up with a layup before the Lady Vols called a timeout with 3:41 left and U-M leading, 59-46.
Michigan made 11 of its 14 free-throw attempts in the final minute to secure its trip to the Sweet 16.
The Wolverines will take on No. 2-seeded and No. 5-ranked Baylor in the regional semifinals Saturday (March 27) or Sunday (March 28) in San Antonio, Texas. Game time and network designation are to be announced.
