While his former team, the Baltimore Ravens, have been signing running backs off the street, Mark Ingram prepared for his first game with the Houston Texans.
Between Aug. 28 and Sept. 9, Baltimore running backs JK Dobbins, Justice Hill and Gus Edwards sustained season-ending injuries, leaving the Ravens remaking their running-backs room on the fly in preparation for Monday night’s season-opening game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Ingram had been a Pro Bowl running back for Baltimore in 2019, but he had been phased out in 2020 and released during the offseason with a season left on his contract.
On Sunday, the former Alabama All-American started at running back for the Texans and ran for 85 yards and one touchdown on 26 carries.
Ingram became the first former Crimson Tide running back to play in 11 NFL seasons, and his 26 rushing attempts were the third-most in his career, behind games with 30 and 27 for the New Orleans Saints in 2014.
Ingram capped Houston’s first scoring drive of the season with a 1-yard touchdown plunge with 6:39 left in the first quarter. With 63 career rushing touchdowns, Ingram is the leader among the NFL’s active players.
The Texans are supposed to be going with a running-back-by-committee approach this season and are the only NFL team carrying five running backs on the active roster. But on Sunday, Ingram carried the load with 18 more rushing attempts than any other Houston player.
Running backs Phillip Lindsay and David Johnson – a pair of former Pro Bowlers – also scored touchdowns for the Texans, with Lindsay running 5 yards for a score and Johnson catching a 7-yard TD pass. Sunday’s game was the second in Houston history in which three running backs scored touchdowns.
Ingram was among the 42 former Alabama players who got on the field on the first Sunday of the NFL’s 102nd season.
