The Vaqueros have been working, although individually, throughout the fall and they now know it's time to start to put everything together as they prepare for the 2021-22 season that starts in November.
"It's really exciting," UTRGV head coach Lane Lord said. "We've had a great fall camp and got to work out with our players in the summer. Any time you can go the maximum amount of hours and not just 30 minutes here and 45 minutes there is a good thing. It's official now. We get our 20 hours a week and we couldn't be more excited. We are 42 days exactly from our first game. We have had a lot of preparation but now is the time to fine tune everything, get everybody in sync, and work on our rotations."
The Vaqueros won just six games last season and are hungry to get back to their winning ways. They have spent a lot of time focusing on defense and rebounding ever since the start of the summer workouts and coach Lord has seen improvements on both of those fronts.
Coach Lord feels confident about the steps the team has taken through the summer and fall workouts and hopes to put it all together to make a good run this season.
"We've had a great summer and we've had a great fall, but we need to continue to build our chemistry," Lord said. "We got all the pieces and it's just fine tuning everything right now. I think defensively we are really improving, and I think we have improved our rebounding, which are two big things that hurt us last year. We are excited for the opportunity."
The Vaqueros welcomed in six new faces for this season, which has added a deeper pool of talent. The group of newcomers will definitely play a role in the team's success this season.
When you add the new talent with the returners, who have taken steps of improvement since the end of the spring semester, the Vaqueros could be in a prime position to see something special this season.
Coach Lord has noticed the difference with this group already.
"I love our team," Lord said. "I think we have good veteran leadership. We also have some really nice newcomers. I think the talent we have is as good as we have had since I have been here and now, we just have to put it all together."
The Vaqueros have hit the ground running. The next 42 days will be full of hard work and determination in preparation for their first game on Nov. 9 against South Florida.
