Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon and county health officials reported the biggest spike in new COVID-19 cases since January on Saturday, at 348.
There were also 5 new deaths reported over the weekend.
McMahon said although hospitalizations have increased over the past couple of months, the biggest concern is not the lack of beds like it was during the previous rise in cases, but the lack of staff to help provide proper care.
"We have 400 people in the hospital for COVID, and now you have a vaccine mandate," he said.
Mcmahon said Gov. Kathy Hochul needs a plan to address shortages in not only hospitals, but in nursing homes as well.
While he says he's not against the mandate entirely, McMahon says he would like to see an opt-out option with weekly testing.
