In our continuing series, Ask BossierNow, a reader is wondering just how safe a Bossier Parish bridge is — even after being posted with weight restrictions.
The bridge on Highway 157, about one mile west of Bellevue, is the topic of concern. The reader submitted a tip via the BossierNow app:
“Bossier Parish has placed a load restriction on the small bridge over Bodcau Bayou of 5 tons due to the recent inspection, and they have informed first responders, but the public has not been made aware. There are still concrete trucks, logging trucks, dump trucks, school buses, and semi-trucks using the bridge daily. There are no warning signs posted along the roadway and no way to turn around even if someone noticed the new sign at the bridge itself.“
BossierNow reached out to the Bossier Parish Police Jury, who directed us to the DOTD because the bridge is on a state highway.
Erin Buchanan, public information officer for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, says that the Bossier Parish School system, in addition to first responders, was notified on August 11th, “so their transportation department should be aware of the bridge posting.”
And she says there is additional signage warning motorists of the new bridge weight restrictions.
“There are actually warning signs posted at LA 528 and LA 162, so motorists are aware of the upcoming posted bridge,” Buchanan said by email. “Again, first responder agencies and the school system were notified of the posting back in August.”
Buchanan also cautions:
“Vehicles continuing to cross are doing so illegally, and that should be reported to either the Bossier Parish Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit (CVEU) or to Louisiana State Police, as these agencies enforce the load postings.”
