MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The rain held off long enough for the Middle Tennessee baseball team to defeat Valparaiso, 5-2, in the opening game of its weekend series. The Blue Raiders (8-3, C-USA 0-0) were led by a strong performance from starting pitcher Aaron Brown who struck out a career high 11 Crusaders (1-6, Missouri Valley 0-0) and earned his third win this season.
"Aaron [Brown] has been pitching extremely well for us and has given us a chance to win in every start that he's had," said Head Coach Jim Toman. "He works his tail off, he's very mature, and he's a team guy."
Today's performance marked the second time this season that Brown punched out double digit batters. In his first start of the season Brown fanned 11 Oakland batters in the, 7-4, win on opening day.
To go along with his 11 strikeouts, Brown finished the day after seven innings pitched, allowed one run, and didn't allow a hit though 6.1 innings.
Brown handed the ball off to David Zoz in the eighth inning. The Illinois native closed out the game and allow one run, on three hits, and struck out five.
The Blue Raiders were led offensively by the bottom third of their lineup. Brycen Thomas, Brett Coker, and Luke Vinson were a combined 5-for-9 at the plate, racked up three doubles, and scored four of MT's five runs.
"We haven't really had a set lineup all year, those guys could easily be hitting five, six, or seven," said Toman. "They're three of our better hitters right now, they just happen to be at the bottom of our order."
Freshman Luke Vinson picked up his first multi-hit game of his career, going 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs and an RBI.
The Blue Raiders will be back on the diamond tomorrow for games two and three of the weekend series against Valparaiso. First pitch against the Crusaders is set for 1 PM, weather permitting.
