GREENVILLE, S.C. --- Despite outshooting Furman 14-12, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga was not able to find the back of the net Friday night at Stone Soccer Stadium in Greenville, S.C. and fell 2-0 to the Paladins in Southern Conference women's soccer action.
Furman got its first goal in the 24th minute off a header by Kyndal Anderson. The Paladins Isabella Guttierez took a pass from Nieva Gaither and brought the ball to the down low on the left and sent it into the box over Chattanooga keeper Ashton Shields. Anderson picked it up high and knocked it in for the first score at the 20:06 mark of the game.
After that Chattanooga stepped up its offense and was able to keep possession the majority of the final third of the half.
The second half started with the Mocs playing aggressive ball and holding possession but that didn't stop the Paladins from scoring their second goal of the match in the 60th minute.
Gaither got her second assist of the game, sending a pass from midfield to a striding Jasmine Greene. She got one touch on the ball and followed it into the box as Shields came out for the stop attempt. With the Mocs defense at her back, Greene fired off her shot through Shields legs and into the bottom middle of the net to put Furman up 2-0 in the 60th minute.
Chattanooga struck back with a pair of attempts in less than two minutes. Mackenzie Smith, who led the Mocs with five shots, sent a hers wide toward the goal at the 60:21 mark of the game.
Chloe Arnold made it even closer as she rifled a shot off her right foot that was stopped by a diving Furman keeper 40 seconds later. Arnold picked up a pass at the top of the box, with a little footwork, she made a turn to her left around the defenders and was able to get the shot off to the left side of the net, but Corn made a diving save to her right for the save.
Osa Iyare pushed toward the box and blasted a shot from 25 yards out at the 83:54 mark of the game that was on target but stopped by Corn once again.
Arnold had three shots for the Mocs with one on goal and Iyare's one shot was on goal. Five other Mocs had one shot. Furman had four with multiple shots. Gaither had a team-best four shots with two on goal and two assists. Gutierrez had three shots and one assist while Anderson scored a goal on two shots and Greene had one goal on just one shot.
Chattanooga suffers its first loss of the season and moves to 3-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in league play while the league-leading Paladins remain undefeated at 5-0, all against the SoCon.
The Mocs return to action Sunday afternoon at Wofford with a 1:00 p.m. kick off. Follow all the action online at GoMocs.com.
