WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The fourth-seeded Hartford men's basketball team made history on Saturday, as it took down No. 6 UMass Lowell, 64-50, in the 2021 Hercules Tires #AEPlayoffs Championship Game inside Chase Arena at Reich Family Pavilion. Grad student Traci Carter, who finished with a game-high 19 points, led the Hawks to the program's first-ever America East Championship and NCAA Tournament bid.
Hartford will find out its NCAA Tournament matchup during the NCAA Selection Show, which airs on CBS Sunday at 6 p.m.
After an impressive playoff campaign, senior Austin Williams was named the America East Championship's Most Outstanding Player. Carter and Williams joined junior Hunter on the All-Championship Team. Marks also received the Elite 18 award for having the highest GPA of all participants in the league's title game.
The Hawks, who push their season-best winning streak to five games improve to 15-8 on the season, while UMass Lowell ends its campaign with an 11-12 record.

After spotting UMass Lowell the first two points of the game, the Hawks held the River Hawks to an 0-for-10 effort and rattled off a 10-0 run to take the early lead. A series of momentum swings resulted in the River Hawks pulling within one at 17-16, but Hartford enjoyed the final run of the half, scoring six of the final eight points to take a 23-18 lead at the break.
After halftime, UMass Lowell came out strong and took a 23-22 lead on a Connor Withers three with 17:11 to go. With the game tied at 31-all, Carter capped a 7-1 spurt with back-to-back jumpers to make it 39-32, with 11:53 left to play. The River Hawks would close the gap back to three at 42-39, before a key 10-0 run pushed the lead into double digits at 52-39 with 6:32 to go.

· This marks the first time in its 27-year Division I history that Hartford has won a conference championship
· With the victory, Hartford also earns the program's first-ever NCAA Championship berth
· The contest marked the third in program history that the Hawks advanced to the title game, and the second straight season
· It also marked the first time that Hartford hosted a Championship Game
· The Hawks shot 50.0 percent in the decisive second half
· Carter tallied a game-high four steals and dished out a game-high three assists
· Austin Williams finished with 17 points while grabbing a team-high eight boards
· Marks dropped 14 points, while sophomore Miroslav Stafl added 10 and a team-high eight rebounds
· The Hawks were stellar defensively, limiting UMass Lowell to 29.5 percent shooting from the floor, including 20.6 percent clip from beyond the arc
· Hartford was solid from behind the arc as well, going 10-of-19 for 52.6 percent
· The victory marked the Hawks' third-straight against the River Hawks in the postseason
· The Hawks have won each of their past five games and, with the victory, extended their postseason winning streak to six
· Two River Hawks finished in double figures, led by Obadiah Noels' 15 points

The Hawks will head to the NCAA men's basketball championship in Indianapolis, and will learn their NCAA Tournament draw on Sunday, during the NCAA Selection Show, which begins at 6 p.m. on CBS.
