KENT, Ohio – The Kent State lacrosse team (1-4, 1-1 MAC) won the first ever Wagon Wheel Challenge game against Akron (3-2, 1-1 MAC) on Saturday afternoon, 9-8, in an entertaining contest at Dix Stadium.
It was the Abby Jones show throughout the entire game as she tied a career high with five goals in the victory. Jones tallied the final goal for the Flashes in what proved to be the difference. She now has 13 goals on the season to lead the team.
The Zips got on the board first with one of Kaylee Riggins' two goals on the day. Jones and Madison Rapier scored back-to-back goals for the Flashes to take the lead.
The two teams went back and forth all afternoon with Kent State taking a 4-3 lead right before halftime.
Early in the second half, Josie Helling recorded her first career goal to push the Golden Flashes out in front. Just a couple minutes later, she scored her second goal of the game.
Kent State held the lead for the entire second half, leading by as many as three goals late in the game. Akron battled back and used back-to-back goals Abby McMullen and Alexis Kiefer to cut the lead to one.
After Jones' fifth goal of the game, Akron scored with 1:08 left in the game to bring it back to a one-point game. The Zips final shot of the game was rifled off the crossbar, bounced innocently to Rapier who corralled the ground ball and ran out the clock to give the Flashes their first win.
Taylor Monturo starred in goal in her second career start for the Flashes. She logged a career-high 12 saves and only surrended eight goals in her first career win. She also forced a team high three turnovers.
The victory earns Kent State a half point in the Wagon Wheel Challenge and ties the season score with the Zips, 4-4. The two teams meet on April 20 to decide another half point in the rivalry.
Graceyn Dean earned her first start on the defensive end of the field and caused two turnovers. Rapier also caused two turnovers, scored two goals and added an assist. Kenzie Sklar notched two assists, while Pilar Lewis and Jackie Wolford each added an assist of their own. Six of the team's nine goals came off an assist.
