MESA, Ariz. – The Colorado women's golf team is currently ninth after shooting a 298 on the first day of the Clover Cup Friday.
Arizona has the early day one lead after recording a 7-under 281 at the 6,184-yard, par 72 Longbow Golf Club, while UNLV is close behind in second at 283. Houston (286) is currently third and Arizona State shot even (288) to come in fourth on the first day.
Seven of the 12 teams are separated by just six strokes. Grand Canyon is fifth (295) but only leads 11th-place TCU by six shots. Oklahoma and Colorado State are tied for sixth (296), Florida International (297) is eighth, CU is ninth and Clemson (299) is 10th. Rounding out the field is Cincinnati, which shot a 24-over 312 in the first round.
The Buffs started on the back nine and it favored most of the team with two recording sub-par scores and another making par. But the front nine gave CU a bit of trouble as only one managed to finish it even.
Sophomore Ellie Gower and junior Alisha Lau turned in the best scorecards for CU, each shooting a 74 to tie for 26th.
Lau was one of the Buffs who did well on the back nine, recording a 1-under 35. She started her day making par on the first two holes before sinking her first birdie. After that, she recorded a bogey and finished the last five holes making four pars and one birdie. She had a bit of trouble on the front nine, mostly with a double-bogey on the 373-yard, par 5 No. 5. Other than that, she recorded five pars, one birdie and two bogeys to finish 3-over on the front (39).
Gower had a very nice round and was pretty consistent on both the front and the back nine, although she did record three bogeys on the back and only made one birdie to record a 2-over (38). As she turned to the front, she was even more consistent and was able to offset each of her bogeys with a birdie and made par on the other five holes for the even 36.
Junior Malak Bouraeda and senior Kirsty Hodgkins are tied for 33rd as each finished with a 75. Bouraeda was 1-under after the back nine after firing three birdies, but she also had a pair of bogeys. She got tripped up a big on the front nine, and like Gower, doubled on No. 5. She also recorded three bogeys and one birdie, which put her at 4-over on the front.
Hodgkins round was a little more consistent as she made a team-high 14 pars, seven on the front and seven on the back nine. She played even on the back as her bogey on No. 12 was offset with her birdie on No. 13. She was off to a nice on the front nine, making par on the first four, but as her other two teammates had done, she also doubled on No. 5. She had another tough break on the following hole with a bogey before she was able to close out her round making three consecutive pars.
Sophomore Issy Simpson made her spring debut and is currently tied for 51st. She shot a 5-over (77) with two birdies, nine pars and also had seven bogeys. She played a 4-over on the back nine but was only 1-over on the front nine. Simpson was one of two Buffs who did not have a double in the round.
"It was another struggle for the team today on and around the greens," head coach Anne Kelly said. "Ball striking over all was very good, but putting, simple chips and staying away from the double bogies seems to be what keeps holding this team back from good scoring. We keep learning from every round and will continue to compete as hard as possible the next two days."
UNLV's Elina Saksa fired a 66 in the first round to lead the field. Arizona's YuSang Hou is two-strokes back (68) and there is currently a four-way tie for third (69).
Hailey Schalk is playing the tournament as an individual and shot a 3-over 75. She started on the front nine and made seven pars as well as one birdie and one bogey for an even 36. On the back nine, she played well with the exception of two holes where she recorded doubles. Otherwise, she made six pars and had one birdie, which put her at 3-over for the round.
The Buffs will be paired with TCU and Cincinnati for the second round and will tee off again from the 10th hole starting at 8:54 a.m. MST.
