The first two games of the 2021 NCAA Tournament featured a pair of come-from-behind victories as No. 16 seed Texas Southern and No. 11 seed Drake each advanced out of the First Four and into Saturday's first round. Drake's 53-52 win over Wichita State was particularly dramatic as the Bulldogs survived to win when Alterique Gilbert's last-second 3-point attempt fell short at the buzzer for Wichita State.
The victory is Drake's first NCAA Tournament win in 50 years and sends the No. 11 seed Bulldogs on to face No. 6 seed USC on Saturday. With star forward ShanQuan Hemphill back in the lineup for the first time in over a month but still clearly limited because of a broken foot, the Bulldogs turned to sophomore guard Joseph Yesufu.
He led the Bulldogs in scoring with 21 points and helped spark Drake to a run in the first half after it trailed by 12 early. Drake trailed just 21-20 at halftime but fell behind 12 again in the second half before Yesufu helped spark a game-winning charge.
In the night's first game, Texas Southern advanced to play No. 1 seed Michigan on Saturday by virtue of a 60-52 win over Mount St. Mary's after the Tigers trailed 30-20 at halftime. The win is the first-ever NCAA Tournament coaching victory for third-year Texas Southern coach Johnny Jones, an industry veteran who was previously in the Big Dance as coach of North Texas and LSU.
