The NBA season is right around the corner and soon, the Cleveland Cavaliers will embark on a new era of Cavs basketball. The team has established a core group of players and implemented a culture under head coach J.B. Bickerstaff.

The goal throughout the entire organization is known and the team should stop at nothing to achieve that goal. Aggressive moves and improved chemistry should make for a fun experience this season as the core looks to grow together.

Of course, things are far from perfect for Cleveland and the team is not close to being in its final form. It may be a couple of seasons before we really have confidence in the team’s ability to win.

Preseason is now over and that brings certain questions and thoughts for the team to answer. Looking at how the offseason has turned out, certain storylines have been created and here, I will be looking at three to look for during the first week of action, which kicks off on Wednesday at the Memphis Grizzlies. Cleveland will then host the Charlotte Hornets and Atlanta Hawks on Friday and Saturday.

Storyline #1: Collin Sexton’s All-Star bid

Last season was the closest that the Cavaliers have gotten to a non-Big Three since Mo Williams with Collin Sexton. Through his first 15 games last season, Sexton averaged 26.8 points and 4.2 assists per game during this stretch, shooting 52.3 percent from the field and 46.8 percent from three-point range.

The high-point of this early season start came against the new-look Brooklyn Nets where Sexton would have a 42-point performance in a Double-OT thriller and follow that up with a 25-point, nine-assist game 2 nights later.

The Cavs hovered around .500 during this span but would quickly fizzle out thus ending Sexton’s chances at his first career All-Star game. Now, a new-and-improved team opens that discussion up again and this year would be the perfect year for it to be his first.

A 24-point, four-assist season last year, the Cavaliers have spent the offseason improving the playmaking and shooting on the team. In turn, this makes life easier for a player who was so frequently double-teamed and had some of the worst spacing in the league.

The expectation should be for Sexton’s downhill play, mid-range game, and three-point aggression to all be improved with the series of moves and offseason work that both Sexton and the Cavs have done.

With All-Star festivities being in Cleveland this season and the Cavaliers being noted as one of the NBA’s best young teams, it would make sense for the media to promote Sexton’s All-Star discussion but he will have to perform as well. Sexton should look to start off hot and get his name out there rather than having to climb out of a potential hole.
