POWELLS POINT, N.C. - Drue Nicholas fired a six-under-par 65 as Drexel finished the first day at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate in third place overall. Nicholas, in his first season with the Dragons, is alone in first place after 18 holes at the Kilmaric Golf Club. Drexel shot 281, which was three-under par, on Sunday. The Dragons are just three shots out of the lead at the 54-hole event.
Nicholas birdied the first three holes to set the tone for Sunday. The transfer from N.C. State had eight birdies on the day as he had his finest round in a Drexel uniform. He was four-under par on the back nine. Jeffrey Cunningham also had a very good day in the opening round. The senior shot a three-under 68, which tied him for fourth overall. Angelo Giantsopoulos and Griffin Mitchell each carded 74's, while Liam Hart had a 75.
Delaware and Georgetown share the lead at six-under par after shooting 278 in the first round. Old Dominion, the host school, and Drake are each one shot back of the Dragons heading into Monday's second round on the par-71, 6,564-yard course. The Drexel five will begin play on Monday at 10 a.m.
