Cooper Kupp is on pace to have one of the greatest seasons for a wide receiver in NFL history, as the Los Angeles Rams wideout continues to be the biggest beneficiary of Matthew Stafford at quarterback. Kupp finished with 10 catches for 156 yards and two touchdowns for the Rams in Sunday's 28-19 win over the Detroit Lions.
The significance of Kupp's performance? Kupp has 56 catches for 809 yards and nine touchdowns through seven games in 2021, becoming the first receiver in the Super Bowl era with 800 yards and nine touchdowns after seven games in a season. Kupp is currently on a 17-game pace of 136 catches, 1,965 yards, and 22 receiving touchdowns -- which would be historical marks in the league.
If Kupp continues this pace, his 136 catches would be tied for third in NFL history while his 1,965 yards would be the most all time. The 22 receiving touchdowns would be the second most in league history, trailing only Randy Moss (who had 23 in 2007).
Kupp also became fifth wide receiver to register at least nine catches, 125 receiving yards and two touchdowns in consecutive games, joining Andre Rison (1990), Cris Carter (1995, 1999), Drew Bennett (2004) and Antonio Brown (2017) on the exclusive list. He's also the fourth player in the Super Bowl era with at least two touchdown receptions in four of his team's first seven games of a season, joining Steve Watson (1981), Moss (2007) and Calvin Johnson (2011).
The only player with 800 yards this season, Kupp leads Ja'Marr Chase (754) and Davante Adams (744) in receiving yards. He's the only player in the league with more than eight touchdowns (Mike Evans and DeAndre Hopkins each have seven).
Kupp's historic start is setting him up for one of the greatest seasons by a pass catcher ever. He's becoming a weekly watch to see if he can become the first 2,000-yard receiver in NFL history.
