CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team sat atop the team leaderboard after each of the first two rounds of the inaugural Battle at Black Creek, hosted by Chattanooga at Black Creek Club.

The Skyhawks two-round tally of 562 (-14) is four shots better than second-place Chattanooga as UT Martin shot a 284 (-4) this morning and a remarkable 278 (-10) during the afternoon. The Skyhawks collected 37 birdies as a team and currently rank first in the 18-team field in eagles (three) and par-4 scoring (4.01, +1).

"I was very proud of the team today," UT Martin head coach Austin Swafford said. "We handled our mistakes better today compared to last week and fortunately capitalized on a few opportunities. We'll look to see where we can improve and get ready for tomorrow."

Not only will the Skyhawks take a team lead into the final 18 holes but UT Martin will look for its third different medalist in five fall tournaments. Returning to his hometown, redshirt freshman Jonathan Xoinis is tied with Tennessee Tech's Nick Sutton for first in the field of 96 players with a score of 137 (-7). He paces the squad with nine birdies and a 3.00 (E) par-3 scoring average through 36 holes.

Tied for third place in the individual standings is reigning Ohio Valley Conference Golfer of the Week Tate Chumley (139, -5). He leads the tournament in par-4 scoring (3.85, -3) and also tops the Skyhawks in pars (23) and par-5 scoring (4.38, -5).

UT Martin's Round 1 score included a team-best 69 from Xoinis as all five of his birdies came over his last 13 holes. Jacob Uehlein tied Xoinis for the team lead with five birdies – four of which came on his first-nine – on the way to a 70 this morning. Tate Chumley's first round score of 71 included a pair of birdies and an eagle on Hole No. 4 – a par-5 playing at 586 yards. Garrett Chumley was the Skyhawks' final countable score as he amassed two birdies and an eagle – the latter of which occurred on the par-5, 526-yard Hole No. 14.

Cayden Chambers was the fifth member of UT Martin's scoring lineup as the freshman from Waverly, Tenn. collected three birdies on his way to a 77.

Xoinis and Tate Chumley both shot identical 68's in Round 2. Xoinis eagled the par-5, 559-yard Hole No. 6 and managed four birdies while Chumley rolled in a team-best six birdies (four on the course's back-nine). Garrett Chumley shaved four strokes off his first-round score with a 70 that included five birdies. Chambers' even-par 72 included two birdies and 14 pars to complete the team scoring.

Uehlein was responsible for three birdies during the afternoon session, ending his day with a 75.

Overall, Garrett Chumley is just inside the top-25 of the individual leaderboard with a 144 (E) as he is tied with his brother Tate with a team-best 4.38 par-5 scoring average (-5). Uehlein (145, +1) is one shot behind Garrett Chumley while Chambers posted a 149 (+5) through 36 holes, tying Xoinis with a team-best 3.00 par-3 scoring average (E).

Competing as an individual today was redshirt freshman Ethan Ray. He combined for three birdies and shot a 159 (+15) following scores of 76-83.
