CLEVELAND, Ohio - Three months ago this week, the Ohio Department of Health confirmed the first three cases of coronavirus in the state. But information continues to emerge that the virus was widely present before then.

The health department has now identified 302 cases spread across 48 of the state’s 88 counties with an estimated onset of symptoms before March 9, the date of the first confirmations.

This includes 21 cases with symptoms dating back to January, and another 90 in February.

The early cases were largely in the metro areas, with 41 cases from Cuyahoga County (Cleveland), 34 from Franklin (Columbus), 20 from Mahoning (Youngstown), 20 from Montgomery (Dayton) and 19 from Hamilton (Cincinnati).

But the early cases also stretch to smaller areas from Lawrence County, the southern most part of Ohio, to Williams County on the far northwest corner. Many small counties in between had one or two cases.

Dr. Amy Acton, director or the Ohio Department of Health, on May 11 announced the first five January cases, moving the earliest estimates up by weeks.

“We can pick them up because of the antibody testing,” Acton said in explaining why the January cases were first being reported in May. “We will learn more and more about the disease. How long it was here in Ohio. How long it was spreading as we do more and more testing.”

Since then, the number of early cases has continued to grow as part of the daily reports from the health department. The earliest two cases now date to Jan. 2.

Most of the early cases listed were not serious, which is why many of them may have gone undetected for so long.

Even today, the earliest known case resulting in a death dates back to just Feb. 29, a case involving a Mahoning County man who died on April 5.

Among the 111 cases identified with estimated onset of symptoms in January or February, there have been 13 hospitalizations and one death.

The 21 cases from January are spread across 15 counties, including Montgomery County with four cases, Warren with three, and Miami with two. With one January case each are Clermont, Erie, Greene, Lake, Logan, Mahoning, Medina, Richland, Stark, Summit, Union and Wood counties.
