STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Authorities said 10 people were arrested and charged on Wednesday after a massive bust on Staten Island uncovered a trove of fireworks and three alligator carcasses.
“We are not making that up,” the Sheriff’s Office wrote on Twitter Wednesday.
The 10 people were apprehended with “significant amounts of illegal fireworks after interstate transport throughout various points of the Staten Island Expressway,” said Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Marcy Miranda.
Additional information regarding the alligator carcasses, and why the individuals were transporting them, was not immediately available, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The Sheriff’s Office said it expects to continue making arrests as part of the trafficking sting, but could not provide specifics — citing an ongoing investigation.
The identities of the 10 individuals charged was not immediately available.
Just a day prior, the FDNY netted a significant fireworks bust, allegedly seizing more than $6,000 worth of illegal fireworks, the department announced.
In that case, two men from Queens were arrested and charged with reckless endangerment and unlawful dealing of fireworks.
Those arrests also took place on the Staten Island Expressway, authorities said.
Both Staten Island busts come only two days after Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the creation of a task force centered on weeding out fireworks suppliers in the city as well as in neighboring states.
The Sheriff’s Office, FDNY and the NYPD are a part of the force that consists of more than 40 officers from each department, including 12 FDNY Fire Marshals, the NYPD Intelligence Bureau and deputy sheriffs.
