Miles Sanders is now the unquestioned top option in the Eagles’ backfield.

Eagles coach Doug Pederson said Sanders is ready to be the lead playmaker in the Philadelphia backfield on Wednesday during an interview with 94WIP’s Angelo Cataldi and The Morning Team.
“Miles is our No. 1,” Pederson said. “He’s the guy we drafted last year, and he had a tremendous rookie season. He’s ready to carry the load but I think you’ve got to have a second or a third guy there to help him.”
Right now, Sanders’ main backup is Boston Scott, who had a strong performance during the Eagles’ playoff push last season. Scott ran for three touchdowns during the team’s playoff-clinching win over the Giants in Week 17.
The team has also brought back Corey Clement, who is coming off back-to-back injury-plagued seasons.
“Boston came on last year and did a fabulous job for us in kind of a relief pitcher (role) for Miles,” Pederson said. “And we brought back Corey, and Corey has been a great addition. I know he’s been injured the last couple of seasons but he gives you a little bit of depth there.”
While Pederson is happy with the running back trio, he’s always looking to create competition at the position. The Eagles know, perhaps better than anyone, that running backs are prone to injuries. Adding notable depth to the group can help in case of an emergency.
“That’s the one thing with running backs, is keeping them healthy for 16-plus games every season,” Pederson said.
The Eagles have an interesting competition brewing behind Sanders, Scott and Clement this offseason.
The team brought back Elijah Holyfield after he signed with the squad late last season. The Eagles also signed undrafted rookies Michael Warren and Adrian Killins. That trio is competing for the fourth spot in Duce Staley’s running back room.
“We’re always looking to add that depth and value, but I am pleased with that running back room right now,” Pederson said. “And Duce does a great job of preparing these guys. So yeah, I’m happy with that group.”
Despite his current comfort with the group, Pederson knows the unit is just one hit away from a potential disaster. Sanders is the key to the group’s success, so the coaching staff will look to design a plan around last year’s second-round pick this offseason.
“Miles is the guy,” Pederson said, “and we’ll fill in from there.”
