MEDINA, Ohio -- Jaideth Cooper can add “published author” to her resume -- something that sets her apart from many other students her age.
Jaideth, 14, is home-schooled and lives in Medina with her family. Her book, “The Unnamed Dimension,” is available on Amazon.
“My book is about a family that travels to another dimension and their daughter gets separated and ends up going on an adventure in this dimension,” she said of her science fiction novel.
“This idea has been developing for a while. It’s gone through a lot of changes, but when I started writing this version of it, I just felt like this was right, and I kept going with it and I couldn’t stop.”
Her book is over 300 pages long and took her about two to three months to write.
“It was something I did on my own in my free time. At first, it was just like a writing exercise and then it became like an actual book,” Jaideth said.
She shared that this was the first book she ever finished. Previously, she would start writing and stop part way through.
“But this one, I really like this idea and I continued with it and I wanted people to be able to read it,” she said.
Her dad helped her with the cover design and the publishing process.
“Really, you have to write your first book and look through it, read it a couple times to edit it and make sure everything is exactly how you want it and you have a cover image and you publish it through Amazon Publishing,” Jaideth said.
“You have to make sure it ends right, enough that they want to know what comes next but they’re not dissatisfied; you don’t (leave) them on a cliffhanger while they’re waiting for so long.”
Publishing a book would be an exciting experience for anyone, but at 14 it is very unique.
“I think finally being able to hold it ... and know I put this out in the world and people can read this” is the best part of publishing a book, Jaideth said.
Being a part of a homeschooling program enabled Jaideth to write her book, as it offered the flexibility she needed to find the time to work on her novel.
“Because (with) homeschooling, you have a set amount of work for the day. It’s not like you have homework. You can finish everything in the morning and you have the rest of the day to write as you please,” she said.
She said it feels good to be able to have people notice her work. She wants to make her book the first in a trilogy and is already working on the next novel in her series.
“I have always been into science fiction and fantasy. I read all of Harry Potter in first grade, so I just wanted to write something like that,” Jaideth said.
Her next book will incorporate some real-life experiences that 2020 and 2021 brought into her fantasy dimension.
