It is ironic that the comment by Gillian Tett on “greenflation” (“Politicians need to be more active when it comes to greenflation”, Opinion, October 1) and the detailed analysis by Chris Giles of the “brutal maths” of electric vehicles (Opinion, October 1) should appear side by side.
Passenger vehicles, whether fossil-fuelled or electric-powered, are at the core of the climate challenge (and several other issues) in city centres.
Covid-19 has dealt a near-fatal blow to the economics of public transport. Only by increasing what is known in transport circles as the “load factor” of vehicles that move passengers can we make a dent in the impact on the environment of people movement.
Neither greenflation nor electric vehicles will help.
