The Jackrabbits were outscored 22-7 in the fourth quarter, as eighth-seeded Syracuse outlasted No. 9 SDSU 72-55 at the Frank Erwin Center on the University of Texas campus.
Syracuse blocked 14 Jackrabbit shots — just two shy of the NCAA tournament record — and forced SDSU into 22 turnovers, stretching out what was a two-point game between the foes after three quarters.
"They had a better fourth quarter, and our fourth quarter, we just didn't generate enough offense," SDSU coach Aaron Johnston said. "We had some missed assignments and they capitalized on it."
The Jackrabbits, playing in the NCAAs for the 10th time since 2009 but making their first appearance on an at-large bid to the 64-team field, traded punches with the ‘Cuse for most of the first half.
SDSU took its first lead of the second quarter when Tori Nelson was fouled on a made 3-pointer and converted the free throw for a four-point play, putting SDSU ahead 25-23 with 7:12 remaining in the first half. Kallie Theisen scored three points to put SDSU up 28-25 but the Orange made a big push to end the quarter, closing on a 12-3 run for a 37-31 lead at intermission.
SDSU (21-4) whittled the Orange lead down once again in the third quarter, cutting it to within one point on two occasions, both on Paiton Burckhard baskets, and it was Haley Greer’s two-pointer late in the quarter that set up a 50-48 margin in favor of Syracuse heading to the fourth quarter.
The two teams were close to start the fourth and Burckhard’s jumper with 7 minutes left cut the Orange (15-8) lead to 56-52 in the fourth quarter. But it would be the last points SDSU would score for more than 5 minutes, Syracuse put together a 12-0 run, capped by Emily Engstler third 3-pointer of the quarter, putting the Orange up 66-53 with 3:20 remaining and sealing the Orange’s trip to the Round of 32. The Jacks finished 4 of 20 on 3-pointers and did not make a triple in the second half.
"Between turnovers and blocked shots, there were too many empty possessions where we didn't score," Johnston said. "When we weren't making threes, they were able to stay at home around the rim."
The Orange likely will take on No. 1-seeded Connecticut in the second round on Tuesday. The Huskies were set to face 16th seeded High Point in their tournament opener on Sunday night.
SDSU and Syracuse were meeting for the second consecutive NCAA tournament, after the Jackrabbits topped Syracuse in the second round in 2019 in upstate New York in a 75-64 triumph that sent the Jacks to the Sweet 16 for the first time.
Burckhard, who was saddled on the bench with foul trouble in the first half and played through it in the second half, finished with a team-high 17 points on 7 of 13 shooting and 15 points of those came in the second half. Nelson had 11 points, but no other Jackrabbit was in double-figures. Theisen finished with five points and 10 rebounds and Tylee Irwin, the Jacks’ leading scorer among active players this season, was 1 of 8 on field goals, finishing with three points and eight rebounds.
SDSU had a slow start, missing its first five field goals before answering an 11-2 Orange start with an 8-0 run to pull within one point.
The Jacks, who were ranked No. 25 in the Associated Press poll entering the tournament, did what they could to defensively bother Syracuse’s size underneath — with the Orange finishing 10 of 25 shooting layups — but the Orange’s size eventually won out. All five of SU’s starters were in double-figures, led by 18 from Emily Engstler, who was 4 of 8 on 3-pointers and also had 12 rebounds.
Kiara Lewis had 14 points, while Digna Strautmane had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Engstler had four blocks, while Kamilla Cardoso had six blocks in the game. SDSU outrebounded Syracuse 46-38.
As they have for the last month, SDSU played the game without star junior Myah Selland, who suffered a season-ending left knee injury a month ago. Selland was the Summit League’s player of the year and led the Jacks in scoring, rebounding and assists.
NOTES: SDSU is now 4-10 all-time in the NCAA tournament, and it was the Jacks’ second appearance as a No. 9 seed.
