DULUTH, MN-- The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced Wednesday that overweight vehicles will be restricted on the Highway 53 bridge in downtown Duluth.
The affected areas include West 1st Street, 20th Avenue West, and 21st Avenue West.
The maximum vehicle weight limit is 40 tons.
For on-ramps that access Highway 53 from 21 Avenue West, the weight limit is 38 tons for single unit vehicles and 40 tons for semi-trucks and trailers.
These weight restrictions will be in place until the bridges are rebuilt.
Signs are being installed on the bridge approaching roadways.
Originally part of the Twin Ports Interchange project, the Highway 53 bridge portion will be deferred until more funding is available.
The Highway 53 bridge is now in the draft Capital Highway Improvement Plan for replacement in 2027.
