A new sign and garden were unveiled on Saturday morning to thank first responders for all of their work during the COVID-19 pandemic in Glenmont.

"I went into the store and I went to the manager Eamon and I said, 'Would you be interested in doing something with the garden department? A living tribute? Something that can always be there for everyone?'" said Steve Peterson. "And he said, 'That's a great idea, that's pretty unique, let's roll with it.'"

It was the first week in May when Peterson went into the Lowe's in Glenmont and asked for help creating a tribute to all of the first responders in Glenmont, Bethlehem, Delmar, and the surrounding area. In just over a month, now a small garden is outside the fire training facility off Center Lane.

The sign reads, "Those who respond first, respond best. This garden honors the brave and caring heroes who met the challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020."

"Mark Kelly and myself were working together on the purple campaign and I came to him with this idea and he came up with the language that's on the sign there now," Peterson said.

Getting the sign up was a labor of love from the community, with services donated by Delmar Sign, Lowe's and Advantage Landscaping.

"Lowe's is a pretty big company, as everyone knows, but because of that they like to be and we like to be a part something even bigger," said Josh Peterson, a supervisor at Lowe's in Glenmont. "It's somewhat of a motto for us is to, 'Love where you live.'"

Josh is personally invested in this project -- with dad Steve spearheading it -- he helped pick and maintain some of the landscaping design elements in the gardening center until it could all be planted last week.

"When he gets an idea, it's gonna go through," Josh said. "He's been doing this his whole life ... This is him, this is who he is. He believes in his town and thankfully, he's raised me to be the same way."

And Steve says, it's just a little something he and the town could do for the first responders and for the community.

"While everyone is trying to keep their distance from everywhere our first responders are going right in and they respond and I just couldn't have been more excited to do something for them," Steve said.
