UAlbany's Karl Mofor, pictured Oct. 16 against Villanova, carried the ball 45 times for 222 yards and two touchdowns on Saturday, Nov. 6 in a 20-7 win over New Hampshire.

The ninth time was the charm.

UAlbany finally got its first win of the football season Saturday at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium, leaning massively on running back Karl Mofor, who carried the ball 45 times for 222 yards and scored both of the Great Danes’ touchdowns in a 20-7 win over New Hampshire.

“Karl Mofor was a beast for us today,” UAlbany coach Greg Gattuso said.

Mofor scored on a 1-yard run late in the second quarter and a 17-yard scamper in the fourth quarter to help the Great Danes (1-6 CAA, 1-8 overall) to a 20-0 lead en route to the team’s first win since beating New Hampshire 24-20 on March 5 in both teams’ opener last spring.

Mofor became the first UAlbany running back to top the 200-yard mark since Alex James’ 229-yard effort on Sept. 7, 2019 against Bryant. His 45 carries shattered the Casey Stadium record of 35 set by Elijah Ibitokun-Hanks on Oct. 29, 2016 and allowed UAlbany to dominate time of possession, controlling the ball for 38:49.

UAlbany’s defense forced four New Hampshire (3-4, 3-6) turnovers, including an interception by Isaac Duffy at the goal line in the final two minutes that snuffed out the Wildcats’ last chance at a comeback.

“That was the most complete game we played,” Gattuso said. “We overcame some injuries, a few guys out today, so I was proud of the guys who stepped up. But all three phases — we played well.”

ITHACA 26, UNION 7

Union’s first regular-season loss in more than three years also ended the Dutchmen’s hopes of securing the Liberty League’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division III tournament.

Ithaca (5-1 Liberty League, 8-1 overall) shut out Union through the first three quarters, building up a 23-0 lead before the Dutchmen (4-1, 8-1) finally got on the board on a 57-yard pass from William Bellamy to Andre Ross Jr., but Union was unable to get any closer.

Ithaca quarterback A.J. Wingfield threw for 197 yards and a touchdown to lead the Bombers in the win. Union got 154 rushing yards on 27 attempts from Ike Irabor, while Bellamy was 13 of 27 through the air for 148 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

RPI 22, ST. LAWRENCE 20 (2OT)

George Marinpoulos’ 17-yard touchdown pass to Vinnie McDonald and Delano Munoz Whatts’ resulting 2-point conversion run gave the Engineers the win in the second overtime, meaning RPI will head into next Saturday’s Dutchman Shoes game at Union with a chance to claim the Liberty League title.

RPI (4-1, 8-1) battled to a 7-7 tie with St. Lawrence (1-4, 4-5) through regulation, with the Saints coming up short on a 36-yard field goal in the final moments of the fourth quarter that would have won the game.

After matching touchdowns in the first overtime, St. Lawrence’s Peyton Schmitt scored on the Saints’ first play of the second overtime, but the conversion was unsusccessful. RPI answered with Marinopoulos’ pass to McDonald, with the 2-point play delivering the victory.

With a win next Saturday at Union, RPI will finish in a tie atop the Liberty League with Ithaca — which has completed its conference schedule — and earn the automatic NCAA berth via a head-to-head tiebreaker with the Bombers. A Union win would leave the Dutchmen and Ithaca tied at 5-1, with Ithaca winning the tiebreaker.
