INDIANAPOLIS - After a collection of close calls and near misses in the season's first five games, the IUPUI basketball team left little to doubt in its home opener on Tuesday night (Nov. 23) as the Jaguars built a 15-2 lead in the game's opening six-plus minutes and never looked back in a 61-41 win over Spalding University. The victory marked the first in the head coaching career for Matt Crenshaw as the Jaguars limited the guests to just 10 first half points and 36.4 percent shooting on the evening.
IUPUI (1-5) had just nine players dressed due to some early season injuries and five either matched or set new career-highs in the scoring column. Sophomore Bakari LaStrap had a team-high 10 points off the Jaguars' bench and Jonah Carrasco, Boston Stanton III and Azariah Seay each tallied eight apiece. Nathan McClure had five points and a team-high seven rebounds in the win.
"I'm pleased with the win and the overall effort," Crenshaw said. "We still have a lot of work to do. I thought we showed a lot of intensity defensively in the first half, but we got a little sloppy once we got a big lead. We still had way too many turnovers and that's the area we need to continue to improve the most.
"I'm happy for our guys, but I'm more excited that we have some time to get back to work before we play again."
IUPUI asserted itself early as Bobby Harvey collected a steal on Spalding's first possession and raced the other way for an uncontested dunk. After Carrasco bullied his way inside for a bucket, Stanton swished a three on the Jags' next possession for a quick 7-0 lead. KJ Pruitt scored on a drive on the next trip and the lead grew to 11-0 when Carrasco putback a Pruitt miss at the 16:27 mark.
The Jaguars maintained a double-digit lead over the final 34 minutes of the contest and led by as many as 24 in the first half at 29-5. IUPUI led 33-10 at halftime as Spalding made just 4-of-22 (18.2 percent) from the field in the opening half and had eight turnovers. IUPUI outrebounded the smaller Golden Eagles by a 23-9 margin in the opening 20 minutes.
The second half was much more evenly played as Spalding (2-4) employed a zone and dared IUPUI to get hot from distance. The zone disrupted the Jaguars into 11 second half turnovers, including some unforced errors that led to transition points.
IUPUI finished the game shooting 46 percent overall and 7-of-23 from three-point range. Spalding closed at 36 percent and 0-of-7 from three. The Jags outrebounded the guests by a 37-20 margin and cashed in on 11 second chance points.
Troy Amanor, Tylan Mann and Isaiah Lockard all finished with 11 points to lead Spalding.
IUPUI will host Detroit Mercy to open Horizon League play on Thursday, Dec. 2 at 7:00 p.m. inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum.
