LAREDO, Texas – Using a pair of big quarters in the first half, Texas A&M-International was able to hold off any attempts by the Western Oregon University women's basketball team to make a comeback in the second half with the Dustdevils claiming the 83-59 win Friday afternoon in Laredo.
Seven players scored at least five points to lead WOU (3-3) with Meadow Aragon going for a team-high 13 points. She also added five rebounds and four steals. Makenna Gambee and Tresai McCarver added nine points apiece, while Kaelin Williams-Kennedy tallied seven points, Alexis Wright with six points and both Madisyn Clark and Caitlin Wheeler added five points apiece.
The Wolves shot a solid 23-53 (43.4) from the field, but struggled from three going 1-10 (10) and from the foul line making 12-23 (52.2). WOU forced 28 turnovers in the game and held the edge in points in the paint (38-28) and fastbreak points (12-10).
TAMIU (4-0) went 23-45 (51.1) from the field and used big advantages from both three-point range making 9-22 (40.9) and from the foul line making 28-40 (70). The Dustdevils held the edge in points off turnovers (31-21), second chance points (15-8) and bench points (31-25).
After TAMIU opened the scoring with a three-pointer, WOU answered back with a layup from Aragon and then another from Cali McClave to give the Wolves a 4-3 lead.
The Dustdevils came back with a 13-0 run to take a 16-4 lead late in the first quarter. Wright and Aragon added baskets down the stretch, but TAMIU took a 21-8 lead after the first 10 minutes.
Williams-Kennedy opened the second quarter with a layup and off a steal by McCarver, Aragon hit a free throw to give WOU a quick 3-0 start to the second frame. After TAMIU had the lead up to 18, WOU chipped away with McCarver hitting two from the line and then a layup from Aragon had the deficit down to 14. The Dustdevils closed the final minutes of the half on a 9-1 run to take a 44-22 lead into halftime.
Gambee hit a pair of shots early in the third quarter and McCarver added two points to help WOU open the second half on a 6-2 run. Still within 18 near the midway point of the quarter, TAMIU went on a 9-0 run to push the lead to 56-29 and would take a 63-36 lead into the final quarter.
WOU closed the game strong outscoring TAMIU 23-20. Aragon began the final 10 minutes hitting a jumper 23 seconds in. Williams-Kennedy, Wright and Amber Winkler all added points through the first five minutes of the quarter. McCarver, Wheeler, Gambee and Clark then finished out the scoring for WOU over the rest of the quarter with the Wolves shooting over 69 percent (9-13) in the fourth quarter.
Emily Swiercz led the Dustdevils with 20 points, while Raiana Brown add 16 points and Kayla Presley gave TAMIU three in double-figures with 10 points.
WOU will now return home to host Alaska Fairbanks this Thursday at 5:15 p.m. to begin GNAC play inside NPE Gym. The Wolves close the week hosting Alaska Anchorage on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
