KENNESAW, Ga. – A hot start for Kennesaw State set the tone early as the Owls handed the FGCU volleyball team its first ASUN loss of the season, 3-1 (25-21, 25-18, 12-25, 25-22) on Sunday afternoon at the KSU Convocation Center. The Eagles fall to 22-5 overall and 14-1 in ASUN play, while the Owls improved to 17-8 overall and 11-3 in league play.
The loss snapped FGCU's 15-game win streak which included a 14-0 start to ASUN play which tied the 2012 program for the best start to a conference season. KSU won its ninth consecutive having not lost a match since FGCU defeated the Owls, 3-0, on Oct. 8 at Alico Arena.
FGCU remains the top seed in the East Division for the upcoming ASUN Championship tournament despite the loss. KSU moved into a tie for second in the division alongside North Florida as both have 11-3 conference records. The Owls won the earlier meeting against the Ospreys and the two will meet again in Jacksonville this upcoming Friday night.
"Kennesaw was outstanding this afternoon and had us on our heels for most of that match. I don't think we won any one phase of the game out there and that will certainly serve as a valuable reminder that we still have plenty of work to do," said head coach Matt Botsford. "This group has been extremely motivated all season, so I know that they will respond well and put in the work necessary to make improvements."
Kennesaw set the tone early hitting .333 (13-4-27) in the first set and .385 (13-3-26) in the second. The Eagles began to rally taking the third set thanks to the offense getting on track with a .417 hitting effort (13-3-24) after going .103 and .033 in the first and second, respectively.
In the fourth set, FGCU fought off a six-point deficit late to pull within two, 19-17, but KSU was able to re-extend the lead by scoring five of the next seven points. Down 24-19, the Eagles fought off match point for the Owls with kills by Skylar English (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) and Erin Shomaker (Granville, Ohio/Granville HS) along with a KSU error. Following a Kennesaw State timeout, the Owls finished the match with a kill by Emma Schurfranz.
Shomaker led all players with 19 kills on the day which marked her season high and was the third-most in her career for a four-set match. She also tallied seven digs, three blocks, and an ace. Aja Jones (Venice, Fla./Venice HS), Emma Szypszak (Mequon, Wis./Homestead HS), and English all added six kills. Szypszak and Jones led the Eagles with five and four blocks, respectively, while Chelsey Lockey (Eaton, Colo./Eaton HS) had 34 assists.
KSU was led by 12 kills from Lauren Chastang and 11 from Dani Ballou with Schurfranz adding nine. Jasmine Brown had a match-high six blocks and McKinley Ferguson had 37 assists to lead all players.
Overall, Kennesaw State hit .224 for the match while holding FGCU to .170 on the day. The Eagles committed a season-high 25 attack errors, while the Owls had 19. KSU also held a slim 11-to-9 edge in blocks.
The Eagles will close out the regular-season on Friday, Nov. 13 by hosting Stetson at Alico Arena. FGCU, which earned the East Division's No. 1 seed this past Friday night, will honor its 2021 senior class prior to the 6 PM opening serve. After that, FGCU will host the 2021 ASUN Championship Tournament from Nov. 18-20 at Alico Arena.

COACH BOTSFORD
Matt Botsford is in his eighth season as head coach of the FGCU women's volleyball program in 2021 after being hired on Feb. 10, 2014. In his tenure, Botsford-led teams have compiled a 178-57 (.758) record overall, including a 94-20 (.828) record in ASUN play. Including this past year's unprecedented spring season, he has taken the program to heights it has not seen in the Division-I era (2007-present) – registering at least 20 wins overall in six of the past seven seasons and at least 10 wins in conference play every season. In 2018, he led the program to its first regular season championship since 2012 (fourth overall) and its first-ever ASUN tournament title, NCAA tournament appearance, NCAA tournament win and victory over a ranked team. His first two campaigns resulted in ASUN regular season runner-up finishes, and the following two saw the Eagles advance to the tournament championship and now the team has won three straight regular season titles, including a division title and ASUN tournament runner-up finish in the spring 2021 season. On Sept. 10, 2016, Botsford led his team to a five-set win over Indiana in Alico Arena, which signified the program's first-ever win over a team from a Power-5 conference. In 2018, he led the team to a win over Miami (Fla.) - the program's first-ever road Power 5 win, and the Eagles followed that up with a straight-set win over the Hurricanes at a neutral site in 2019.
