JAGS KICK OFF FIRST NIGHT OF HOUSE OF CHAMPIONS - IUPUI Jaguars

INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI swimming and diving team kicked off the three-day House of Champions Invitational today with prelims in the morning sessions and finals in the night session with platform diving in between sessions. Thursday's events were highlighted by Alex Smith's first place finish in the men's platform diving event and Emmaleigh Zietlow's first place finish in the B Finals for the 500 free. Zietlow's time of 4:54.00 is the fourth fastest time in school history.
 
The Jags had 16 athletes qualify in the first half of the day for the finals session. After the prelims, Alex Smith took first place in the men's platform diving with a score of 288.10. The lady Jags started the afternoon session of with a sixth-place finish (1:35.32) in the 200 free relay. With a time of 1:20.78, IUPUI's men's 200 free relay team, made up of Spencer Jyawook, Kevin Burke, Riley Lohse and Wes Wickens, took first place in the men's 200 free relay.
 
Zietlow then took first in the B Finals of the 500 free improving her time to 4:54.00 after an earlier time of 5:03.11 in the prelims. Nico Gallego took seventh place (4:37.31) and Luke Dibley (4:41.39) placed eighth in the men's 500 free.
 
Jason Harary clocked a top 10 time in school history with a time of 1:49.79 in the 200 IM to earn a second-place finish.
 
"I swam way better than I did in the morning, my teammate Logan Kelly was the top seed in the morning. He really pushed me and gave me a lot of fire for the evening, so I went out there and swam my best," said senior Harary. "I couldn't get first, I got out touched by a little bit but that's alright. I'll take a good time and for a midseason time I'll take it."
 
Logan Kelly followed with a fifth-place finish (1:51.06) in the 200 IM.
 
In the women's 50 free, Caylee Hamilton led the Jags with a 15th place overall with a time of 23.85. On the men's side, Spencer Jyawook clocked a time of 20. 18 to earn a fifth-place finish in the men's 50 free, followed by Kevin Burke in seventh (20.36).
 
The Jags ended the night with the 400 medley relay with the women's team, Lauren Thompson, Jenna Nethercutt, Caylee Hamilton and Lilly Brandt, taking fifth place (3:50.66). The men's team, Benjamin Kimmel, Logan Kelly, Spencer Jyawook and Kevin Burke, finished second with a time of 3:18.41.
 
Overall, the men's team currently sits in second place with a total of 350.5 points behind UIndy's 481 points. The lady Jags are in sixth place with 145 points. Both teams are hopeful for what the next two days.
 
"We just have to try to get on the walls first. Prelims are going to be the toughest part for tomorrow and day three because those don't usually go as well as the afternoon," said Harary. "As long as we have the right energy in the morning, we'll be swimming really fast."
 
IUPUI will look to build on their successful swims tomorrow with prelims starting 10 a.m. following by diving at 1 p.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
