In the second story of our series highlighting local first responders for National First Responders Month, Paramedic Melissa Walker shares her experience working for Paris EMS.

Walker has been working as a paramedic with Paris EMS for two years now. During that time, she has had to face many obstacles and has had many rewarding experiences as well. She said she loves the moment when she finishes a call as it is satisfying to know she was able to do everything she has been trained to do to help someone.

“I didn’t come into this profession thinking I would save everyone, I just wanted to be able to give someone else a chance, and I’ve been able to do that,” Walker said. “From sending a patient out by helicopter to dropping them off in the ER to talking with families who have lost their loved ones, knowing that my partner and I were able to give our patient a chance is a feeling that is indescribable. It’s my favorite part of a call, and one that I don’t see myself tiring of anytime soon.”

Growing up, Walker said she didn’t think she would be able to emotionally handle what paramedics see and do on a daily basis.

“I really surprised myself and my family,” she said. “I come from a family of educators, but I ended up taking after my aunt Diane and became a first responder. I guess we’re the black sheep of the family, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m grateful for where I have ended up.”

Walker said the hardest part of her job is probably the hours; Working 24-hour shifts takes a lot out of someone.

“I was a stay-at-home mom before this and waitressed in the evenings,” she said. “Now I work 24-hour shifts. I miss being at home with my family often, but working in EMS has made me even more appreciative of my family and the life I have. I don’t take it for granted like I used to. It also helps that I can FaceTime them, or they’ll come up and see me when they get out of school.”

When asked what the best part of her job is, she said the best part is being around such supportive and capable people.

“I have met some incredible people who have been open to teaching and working with me to be the best I can be,” she said. “They are supportive and have been there to talk me through rough calls. Paris EMS truly has some of the best paramedics, EMTs, and billing staff around. We have been going through a lot of change recently, but everyone has taken it in stride.”

Walker went on to say she’s always heard to “find a job that you love so you never work a day in your life.”

“I used to laugh at that saying because I thought it was just something to give people hope,” she said. “Now, I know what it truly means to enjoy your work each day you come in. It really isn’t just a saying – anyone can achieve it. To those who are nervous to step out of their comfort zone and try something new, you never know what you’re capable of until you try.”

Join us in thanking Paris EMS Paramedic Melissa Walker for all she has done and continues to do for our community. Stay tuned next week for another first responder highlight story as we thank local first responders for all they do during National First Responders Month.
