
The Mountaineers combined to win all 16 events in the first session, tallying a total of 1,611.5 team points, with the men contributing 851 and the women grabbing 760.5.
"Overall I thought it was a pretty good session," said coach Vic Riggs. "We raced well; however I think there's room for improvement in tomorrow's session, and there's areas we need to work on and clean up. I'm looking forward to seeing how we take advantage of that opportunity."
Fifth-year Max Gustafson and junior Harna Minezawa led the way for WVU, Gustafson notched four wins, collecting two individual and two relay victories. Minezawa tallied three wins, including two relays and one individual. Fourteen different Mountaineers claimed first-place finishes on the opening night of competition.
The women's 200-yard medley relay officially kicked off the 2021-22 campaign. Fifth-year Ana Zortea and juniors Jacqueline McCutchan, Minezawa and Ginger Hansen took first place with a time of 1:47.18.
In the men's event, West Virginia quickly tallied its second win of the night as sophomore Justin Heimes, senior Fausto Huerta and fifth-year's David Dixon and Gustafson finished in 1:31.36.
Freshman Emily Knorr grabbed her first collegiate victory and tallied the first individual win of the weekend in the 1,000-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 10:22.73. Freshman Miranda Kirtley finished second with a time of 10:43.32.
Sophomore William Mullen took first in the 1,000 free (9:33.35) to claim the men's first individual victory, ahead of sophomores Logan McFadden in second (9:56.68) and Brendan Williams in third (9:58.30).
Both squads dominated the 200-yard free sweeping nine of the top 10 finishes in both events. Sophomore Abby Reardon led the way for the women, touching the pads in 1:53.99, while freshman Morgan Burton took second (1:55.57) and Knorr finished third (1:56.73). Gustafson claimed the victory on the men's side, recording a time of 1:42.59, followed by juniors David Snider (1:44.84) and Dixon (1:45.08).
Continuing the trend of the evening, in the 100-yard backstroke, both teams claimed the top five finishes. For the women, Zortea took first and earned her first individual win as a Mountaineer, finishing with a time of 57.52.
Dixon had a dominating performance in the 200-yard fly, he notched first place by a solid seven seconds (1:49.15). The Mountaineer men followed Dixon with the next five finishes.
In the 50 free, the women secured the top five spots with Minezawa touching the pads first (24.20) and Zortea closely behind in second (24.23). On the men's side of the event, Gustafson tallied his second individual victory of night, touching the wall in 20.50.
To cap off the first night of competition, the WVU took the 400 free relay. McCutchan, Minezawa, Hansen and Reardon led the way in the women's event, tallying a time of 3:32.40. Freshman Braden Osborn, sophomore Roanoke Shirk and fifth-years Dixon and Gustafson took first place on the men's side, capturing the victory with a time of 3:08.18.
The men's and women's diving teams used today as an exhibition meet to capitalize on skillsets.
"We used today as an opportunity to reinforce our skillset on towers," said coach Karla Helder. "Not many teams have the opportunity to practice and preform in a high environment, so we wanted to use that to our advantage. Tomorrow we'll begin springboard work."
The West Virginia State Games conclude Saturday morning, with action at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park starting 11 a.m. ET.
