WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - There was no need for extra motivation from either Maize or Maize South as the two teams looked to steal a win in the 2021 edition of the crosstown rivalry. In just the second meeting in the regular season between the two, the Eagles used a solid first half to propel them over the Mavericks 49-27.

Maize South’s offense entered the night fresh off a 68-point performance against Newton a week ago. In order to top the Mavs, the Eagles would need to find a way to slow down one of the state’s highest scoring offenses.

Challenge accepted.

In the first half, Maize was able to keep the Maverick ground game bottled up, rarely allowing Maize South to cross midfield. The Eagles keyed on star running back Evan Cantu and rallied multiple defenders to the ball to help bring him down. The Eagle defensive line wreaked havoc for most of the first half, limiting the run game and applying pressure in the passing attack. Caden Miranda and Dominic Gloria caused issues from the defensive line position. Gloria was able to come away with a first half sack before Cael Moses took the ball away on an interception.

The Eagle defense did allow one first half score near the end of the second quarter when Luke McCormack was able to convert on a slant route from Owen Bailey.

With a stout performance cooking from the defense, the Maize offense had no choice but to put points on the board.

Junior running back Daeshaun Carter was able to cap off three drives from close in the first half, punishing defenders with goal to go. One of his most impressive plays came on a 40-yard run where Brandon Kerr sealed the defender, springing Carter for points.

Avery Johnson and Justin Stephens were in sink in the first two quarters of play, connecting on numerous big plays including a touchdown. Stephens willing the ball down the field came away with a tipped ball after fighting with a defender for possession to extend the Eagle drive. On the drive prior, Stephens was able to score on a slant in the red zone.

Following the game, Maize and Maize South have identical 5-1 records. The Eagles are set to take on Derby while the Mavericks look to bounce back against Hays.
