PHILADELPHIA – Five different Explorers scored as La Salle field hockey (5-6, 1-2 A-10) secured their first conference win of the season in a 5-2 win over Saint Louis on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Explorer offense came out of the gates hot and never relented, as sophomore Tatum Johnson scored her seventh goal of the season just 6:15 into the match to give La Salle an early 1-0 lead.
  • Cat McFadden followed with her first career goal in the second quarter, swatting home a feed by teammate Tatum Johnson to double the La Salle lead to 2-0 at the 17:58 mark.
  • Senior Regan Dougherty followed with her second goal of the season, finishing a pass in front by freshman Simi Potgieter, who picked up her first collegiate point with the helper.
  • Saint Louis answered with a goal 50 seconds later by Lotte Teunissen to cut the Explorer lead to 3-1, where it would stay until the half.
  • Freshman Sofia Pla ignited the Explorer offense again early in the second half, scoring her team-high eighth goal of the season on a penalty corner just 1:43 into the third quarter to extend the Explorer lead to 4-1.
  • Lauren Pendergast responded for the Billikens with a penalty corner deflection to make the score 4-2 going into the final quarter.
  • In the fourth, Natalie Biliunas tallied her first goal of the campaign on the second assist of the day for Johnson, giving the Explorers a 5-2 lead at the 49:03 mark.
  • That would be plenty of offense for an Explorer defense that allowed just five shots, as Ryan Curley made three saves in the 5-2 win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Friday's five-goal performance marks a season-high output for the La Salle offense, as they entered with two performances of four goals.
  • La Salle now holds a record of 5-1 at Hank DeVincent field in the fall 2021 season.
  • Five different Explorers found the back of the cage, including the first goals of the season for Biliunas and McFadden.
  • Tatum Johnson ended with a game-high four points, which matches the most points in a game for the sophomore this season.
  • Pla's eight goals put the freshman in a tie for second in the A-10 conference.
  • Curley (5-6) picked up her fifth win of the season, outdueling Billiken goalkeeper Sasha Sander.

UP NEXT:
The Explorers will take a break from Atlantic 10 conference play on Sunday, Oct. 3 when they head to Washington, D.C. to take on Georgetown.
