Diamodbacks 7, Reds 0: The First Beercap of 2021!!!! - AZ Snake Pit

boonoor.blogspot.com

Hello my fellow Pitters and Brutes!

I’m back!!

Beer 1: Star Cloud Hazy IPA by Modern Times

So good to be back in the writing saddle again, and so good to be almost fully vaccinated and almost out of Covid funk.

Normal is gradually returning.

Yes, I’m still very much apart of the “haze craze” when it comes to beers and this is a classic. Though honestly any beer by Modern Times is a classic in my book. So bear with me during this, there are many hazy IPAs to follow.

It feels like it’s been forever since I’ve watched Weaver pitch, and boy oh boy I forgot how HARD he throws. K’s the first two Reds and gets Votto to ground in to the shift. This is the kind of Weaver I miss. More please!

VanMeter gets aboard with one out in the 1st, but a Walker pop-up and Peralta ground out keeps our half of the inning quite boring. 0-0 going in to the 2nd.

Weaver gets two more Ks in the 2nd and ends the inning with a pop up. 4 Ks in two innings of work, that’s a hell of a way to start a game.

Escobar leads off our half of the 2nd with a ground rule double. I like (Borat voice).

Pavin immediately sends him home with a hard hit single and we’re up 1-0. Woot!!!!

Beer 2: King Sue IPA by Toppling Goliath

I’ve had quite a few Midwest friends absolutely freak out when they heard this brewery started distributing in to AZ. I thought it was just hype, but I can tell you the right now the hype is very very real.

Best beer ever? No, but I can tell you it’s worth every penny and would buy again.

The Weaver hype appears to continue to grow here in the 3rd as he notches another 1-2-3 inning and has yet to allow a Red to reach a base. 5 K’s through 3innings is nothing to sniff at either.

A VanMeter 1out walk followed by a Walker single sets the table for Peralta who crushes a bomb right in to the pool. I’m loving this game. A lot. 4-0 Dbacks going in to the 4th.

Wow. Weaver is absolutely cruising through 4innings right now. Truly impressed, especially with how Meh he was in Spring Training and his last outing. Now, I’m not saying he’ll just morph back in to his 2019 form but so far I’m getting pretty encouraged.

Both Ahmed and Kelly reach to start the 4th, great success (also Borat voice), followed by Weaver and Lacastro getting their tickets punched. VanMeter’s walk juices the bases for Walker with two outs, but to no avail as he strikes out on a dirt pitch. Bleh. Still up 4-0 going in to the 5th.

Beer 3: LFG by Mason Ale Works

Hmm. I don’t normally encounter a double IPA that legitimately tastes light and refreshing. Wild. This is the kind of velvet hammer that you could take camping and find yourself time traveling without knowing why. I other words it’s extremely good, but beware......

Speaking of beware, the Reds had best be aware of Weaver by now. He’s dominant through 5innings of 6k hitless baseball. I’m speechless.

This Escobar who just annihilated at 2run blast, that’s the one I miss from 2019. More of that please. 6-0 Dbacks

Kelly, Weaver and Locastro follow that moment up by all getting aboard to juice the bases for VanMeter with 2outs. In somewhat anticlimactic fashion VanMeter draws a walk to make it 7-0, but that gives Walker a second chance to redeem himself after leaving the bases full in the last frame.
CWalk fails once more in his quest for a grand slam, meh, we’re still up and my beer is still cold. All good.

Weaver’s perfect game ends as he accidentally plunks Blandino, but his no no is still intact through the 6th. Honestly can’t believe my luck in writing for this game.

Beer 4: Garbage People Dbl IPA by Drekker

Drekker does two things I love: they make dank as f$&@ IPAs and super cool can art (check em out). This beer embodies both perfectly and really fits my already ascendant mood this game has brought upon me.

No more Dbacks offense in the 6th, so we go in to the 7th with the score still at 7-0, certainly not the game I was expecting to cover today.

Sigh. The no no has ended for Weaver here in the 7th. He had one hell of a game, one that I definitely did not think he had in him going in to today. Absolutely amazing. Hopefully a sign that he’s finally getting his mojo back.

No action for us in the bottom of the 7th and we go in to the 8th with Peacock strutting up to the mound.
Peacock’s strut appears to be off slightly from his last outing as he allows the first two Reds to reach. Luckily Peacock is made of more than feathers and we yet again ensure the Reds leave another inning scoreless. 7-0 still going toward the bottom of the 8th.

No more runs for us in the 8th, but if Peacock keeps doing his job in the 9th we’ll be right as rain.

The Peacock strut, is very much in full force now folks, as is our victory. What a game and what a Beercap.

Hope you all enjoyed and I hope to read your comments soon!

Post-game audio

Luke Weaver. Pretty cool interview, both informative and also funny, especially towards the last couple minutes discussing Carson Kelly throwing down to 2nd base with 3 outs.

Torey Lovullo. We got 4 game plans! Actually an interesting comment in response to speaking up for Luke earlier during his struggles. “That’s my job, my job is while they’re here to believe in them and coach them up” Emphasis added, but it kind of speaks to the “loyalty to a fault” criticisms.

The win gives the D-backs their first series victory of 2021, and improves their record to 4-6. Okay, it’s still not Mt. 500, but you can see it from here... Next up, the A’s, who come into two for a quick two-game set tomorrow. Madison Bumgarner starts, so... Well, we’ll see.
