With four of the top-45 picks, including two in Friday’s second round of the draft, Jacksonville could be on its way to overtake the Texans for third place in the AFC South behind Tennessee and Indianapolis.
The Texans, who used to rule the division before finishing 4-12 last season, have a six-game winning streak over the Jaguars, but that could be coming to an end.
After losing 15 consecutive games last season and finishing with an NFL-worst 1-15 record, coach Doug Marrone was fired and replaced by Urban Meyer. The Jaguars had the first pick in the draft and used it on Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, as expected.
With their second pick in the first round acquired from the Rams in the trade involving cornerback Jalen Ramsey, Jacksonville selected Lawrence’s college teammate, running back Travis Etienne.
On Friday, the Jaguars used the first pick in the second round on Georgia cornerback Tyson Campbell. They were 31st in defense last season, including 27th against the pass.
With the 45th overall pick, the Jaguars added offensive tackle Walker Little, a Houston native from Stanford.
Little was the third offensive player drafted by Jacksonville. Last season, the Jaguars were 28th in offense, including tied for 28th in rushing.
If the Jaguars are able to use the draft as a springboard out of the division basement, that won’t be good for the Texans.
