BOBCAT CALENDAR: Montana State Made its First Out-of-State Football Trip Today in 1905

SPOTLIGHT: No wonder it was four more years before the Montana State football team traveled outside the borders of Montana.

Montana State opened the 1905 season with its first-ever out-of-state trip for a football game, playing "the first game of the year for our team and probably the hardest one," according to the Weekly Exponent. 

MAC "fought hard individually but they could not get together and Idaho tore through for steady gains." Scott, Montana State's quarterback, "makes up for (a lack of size) with grit," and played well on defense. Idaho held a 16-0 lead at the end of the half, but dominated the visitors with superior size and depth as the second half wore on. In fact, on Montana State's seven possessions during the game the team "made her yardage (gained a first down) only once." That came in the first quarter, when a pair of one-yard gains by Yergey sandwiched a four-yard run by Braden. Idaho gained 715 yards from scrimmage on the day.

Two days after the demolition in Moscow, Montana State "was not in good shape to play" when it called on Washington State. The home team won that game 26-0.team jumped into the fire eight miles west. The team lost 26-0 at Washington State, keeping the score relatively low in spite of "not (being) in good shape to play."

The road trip featured some intrigue, according to the Washington State Evergreen. Taken in full from the October 12, 1905 edition:

"In justice to Montana team it must be said that because of circumstances which they were not responsible for, they played the U. of I. team on Monday and our team on Wednesday. Consequently they were in bad shape for a game. Their game with Idaho should have been played on last Saturday. Idaho postponed the game until Monday and while knowing that we expected to play Montana on Wednesday, kept it all dark and allowed Montana to believe that they were to meet our team on next Saturday. On account of the Oregon trip it was not possible to postpone Wednesday's game and Montana suffered by it, although entirely blameless."

This trip was the first of many contests the Bobcat football program would play against the schools separated by eight miles and the Idaho-Washington border. MSU is 21-10 all-time against the Vandals, 0-10 against Wazzu.

The Montana State football team didn't venture beyond the Treasure State's borders again until 1911, when the team lost 97-0 at Utah. In full disclosure, the 1906 and 1907 seasons were canceled by faculty decree as the school worked through financial and oversight issues pertaining to varsity football. The massive loss at Utah in 1911 came on the day that team member Charles Lange, a freshman, died at his home in Helena from injuries suffered during football practice on the Bozeman campus. With that tragedy, the team discontinued its season.

BONUS: In happier news, Montana State has won six games on October 9 in the Big Sky, victimizing Weber State in four of those. MSU beat the Wildcats 20-17 in 2004 for Homecoming, captured one of the team's three wins by a 29-6 score in 1999, won 23-20 in Ogden in 1982, and drilled Weber State 44-0 in Ogden in 1976.
