DURHAM, N.C. – Duke field hockey collected its first win of the 2020 campaign with a 2-0 shutout victory over Wake Forest on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
The Blue Devils' (1-6, 0-4 ACC) two scores were the first collegiate goals for graduate student Eva Nunnink and freshman Darcy Bourne. The Demon Deacons (2-6, 1-3 ACC) were limited to only three shots in the contest.
"It feels great to get a win," head coach Pam Bustin said. "We've been patiently building and anticipating to finally get a win, and I couldn't be prouder of how they did it. I think this was one of our most consistent games and all 20 of them made an impact on the outcome."
Duke came out aggressive in the first period, registering five shots and both of its penalty corners. The Blue Devils capitalized on their second corner opportunity in the 11th minute, as Nunnink slipped the ball past the Wake Forest goalkeeper into the left side of the cage for her first goal in a Duke uniform. Senior Lily Posternak inserted on the score, notching her first assist of 2020.
Wake Forest recorded its first shot of the match off a penalty quarter in the second period, but Duke's defense blocked the chance at tying the game and held a 1-0 advantage heading into the second half.
Junior Noor van de Laar nearly made it a 2-0 contest in the 38th minute, but the Belgium native sent a ball just wide of the right post.
Sprinting from one end of the field to the other, Bourne drew a penalty stroke in the 44th minute for Duke's third straight match with a stroke. Bourne buried the shot into the top left corner, recording her first collegiate goal as a Blue Devil and expanding Duke's lead to 2-0.
"We discussed before the game about who would take a penalty stroke and we decided to change it up with Darcy," Bustin said. "It worked out great because Darcy deserved to take it – she drew that stroke. I was really proud of her to put it away the way she did."
Bourne, who led both teams with three shots, was inches from tacking on her second goal of the contest in the 53rd minute but missed just left of the cage.
Following a strong defensive effort, freshman Piper Hampsch only faced three shots in the game and made one save in her first collegiate shutout.
"I think we were more aggressive outside the circle and more organized," said Bustin. "Defensively, we handled the midfield much better than we did on Friday and we didn't turn the ball over as much."
The Blue Devils outshot the Demon Deacons, 8-3, with four shots on target while both teams earned two corners in the game.
Duke looks to carry the momentum into next weekend as the Blue Devils host Virginia for their final regular season game of the fall on Saturday, Oct. 31. Saturday's match is set for 1 p.m. and will be available to watch on ACCNX.
