DURHAM, N.C. – The month of May has traditionally been a successful time in Duke women's tennis history, and this week, we wanted to look back on last year's NCAA Tournament success in Bull City.
May 4, 2019 | NCAA Tournament First Round | vs. James Madison
The fifth-ranked Duke women's tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament by defeating James Madison, 4-0, in first round action in Ambler Tennis Stadium. With the victory, the Blue Devils elevated to 24-3 for the 2019 season and continued their undefeated streak at home.
For the 20th time in the season, the Blue Devils claimed the doubles point heading into singles. The 24th-ranked doubles team in the country, Meible Chi and Kaitlyn McCarthy got Duke off to a strong start with a 6-1 victory on court two over Emma Petersen and Daria Afanasyeva before rookie tandem Margaryta Bilokin and Maria Mateas closed out the doubles point by defeating Amanda Nord and Michelle Los Arcos, 6-2, on Duke's third court.
Bilokin carried the doubles momentum into singles action as she was the first one off the court for the Blue Devils. The New Canaan, Conn., native cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory on court five over Jona Roka to improve to 20-6 in her first collegiate season.
Minutes later, McCarthy notched Duke's third point of the match on court three. The Cary, N.C., native defeated Daniela Voloh 6-4, 6-1. The second set was tied at 1-1 before the senior reeled off five-straight games to improve to 12-7 last spring.
It was sophomore Kelly Chen who clinched Saturday's match with a court two victory. Chen, who is ranked No. 21 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), defeated Abby Amos 6-4, 6-3 to send Duke to second round action of the NCAA Championships. Chen elevated to 20-4 with her performance.
May 5, 2019 | NCAA Tournament Second Round | vs. Arizona State
The rain and a change of venue were no match for the fifth-ranked Duke women's tennis team as they defeated Arizona State, 4-0, in second round action of the NCAA Team Championships in Durham, N.C.
For the 21st time over the season and the second-consecutive match, Duke captured the doubles point over Arizona State.
Kelly Chen and Ellyse Hamlin dominated in the first four points on Duke's top court to pull off the upset over Arizona State's top-ranked doubles pair. Chen and Hamlin, tabbed No. 47 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), defeated No. 4 Lauryn John-Baptiste and Ilza Hattingh (6-3). A few minutes after, rookie dubs team Margaryta Bilokin and Maria Mateas defeated Savannah Slaysman and Tereza Kolarova (6-3) on Duke's third court.
Hamlin was first off the court for the Blue Devils in quick fashion. The Fairfield, Conn., native cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Slaysman on court five. Hamlin improved her team-leading record to 22-2 last spring.
McCarthy tallied Duke's third point of the match with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Sammi Hampton on court four just before Bilokin clinched the match for the Blue Devils on court six. Bilokin cruised to a 6-0 first-set win over Samantha Alicea before she dropped four-straight games in the second set. Bilokin took the court with an 8-6 win in the tiebreak.
With the first and second round victories, the Blue Devils earned the right to host the round of 16, the first time in NCAA program history with the new tournament format.
