MONMOUTH, Ore. – While the final result wasn't what the Western Oregon University volleyball team had hoped for, getting a chance to play their first home game in almost two years was. Behind a very enthusiastic home crowd, the Wolves battled Alaska on Thursday night in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both as the Nanooks used strong play throughout to take the 3-0 victory (25-17, 26-24, 25-17).

Bailee Hartsook paced the Wolves tying for a game-high 13 kills. Aubrey Stanton setup the offense with 25 assists. On defense, Sophie Matlock tallied 17 digs, while Isabel Hurliman added 11. Makenzie York sent back three blocks.

WOU (2-6, 0-1 GNAC) opened strong in the first set moving out to a 4-1 lead. Stanton spun in a service ace and then a pair of errors from Alaska (8-5, 1-0 GNAC) had the Wolves with the early lead. Lauren Smith and Hartsook then tallied kills to push the lead out to four at 8-4. Past the midway point, WOU used a kill by Lauren Smith and an attack error by the Nanooks to stay in front at 15-12. Alaska countered, finishing the set on a 13-2 run to come back and grab the first set at 25-17.

The second set could've gone either way and was tight throughout. The Nanooks opened with the first three points, just to watch WOU come back with an 8-0 run. Hartsook started the run and after Hurliman and Delaney Smith all added points, WOU held an 8-3 lead. Sarah Crowell tallied two straight service aces to keep the lead at 12-7. Still holding a 14-10 lead, Alaska answered just like they did in the first set going on an 8-0 run to move in front 18-14. WOU kept fighting, pulling even at 20 on a double-block from Hartsook and York. After Alaska moved to set point at 24-22, York and Hurliman hit back-to-back kills to even the set. The Nanooks were able to close the set out getting a point off a WOU service error and then a kill by Emily Moorhead for the 26-24 second set win and 2-0 match lead.

Early on in the third set, WOU moved in front 8-5 with Hartsook, York, Hurliman and Stanton collecting points. Alaska countered with a 11-3 run to open up a 16-11 advantage. WOU tried to get back in the set and kept the final points close, but the spread was too big to overcome with the Nanooks taking the third set by a score of 25-17 and the match at 3-0.

For the match, Alaska tallied 43 kills to 14 errors in 116 chances (.250), while WOU had 36 kills to 20 errors in 122 chances (.131). Alaska held the edge in kills (43-36), service aces (5-3), blocks (12-5), assists (39-33) and digs (56-54).

Karli Nielson led Alaska and tied Hartsook with a match-high 13 kills. Cate Whiting tallied 31 assists. On defense, Moorhead sent back eight blocks, while AveRee Reynolds added seven. Dani Dodge posted 23 digs.

WOU will face Alaska Anchorage on Saturday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. inside NPE Gym. The Seawolves survived a five-set battle tonight at Saint Martin's.
