EUGENE, Ore. – Fifth-year senior Sydney Laufenberg placed fifth overall in the discus throw at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, earning her first career First Team All-America honors on Saturday afternoon at the historic Hayward Field.
Laufenberg's second throw was her best of the day, rebreaking her school record with a personal-best mark of 58.02 meters (190-4 ft.). With that mark, Laufenberg finished fifth overall, becoming the first woman in school history to earn First Team All-America honors in the discus.
The Clinton, Iowa native, also posted the highest finish by any Missouri Valley Conference athlete at the NCAA Championship meet by placing fifth in the discus.
Her qualification for the NCAA Outdoor Championships was already historic, as she became the first women's discus thrower in Illinois State track & field history to qualify for the discus twice in her career and was one of only five women in school history to qualify in the same event in back-to-back seasons. Laufenberg previously earned Second Team All-America honors in the discus in 2019.
