BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh football defensive back LaTreil Wimberly has been named the winner of the J. Daniel Nolan Award, given to Lehigh Athletics' top first year male student-athlete. Wimberly emerged from the three finalists announced at Lehigh Athletics' annual Convocation Program on May 10.
The committee that decides the department award winners initially elected to postpone the announcement pending the results of postseason awards and postseason competition for spring sports.
Wimberly was the lone first-year football student-athlete to earn a spot on an All-Patriot League football team with his second team selection at defensive back. He started all three games at cornerback for the Mountain Hawks in the spring 2021 season, finishing with 13 tackles and two tackles for loss. Wimberly made five tackles in games against Bucknell and Lafayette. His best game of the season was the April 3 tilt against the Bison, where in addition to the five tackles, Wimberly added 1.5 tackles for loss, a sack and two pass breakups, while limiting Bucknell's Brandon Sanders to three receptions for 24 yards, one week after a 12-catch, 179-yard effort against Lafayette.
The Glenarden, Md., native is the 12th football student-athlete to win the Nolan Award since its inception in 1961 and the first since Jason Leo in 2006.
The other two finalists for the J. Daniel Nolan Award were Scott Cole from men's lacrosse and Conor Reilly from men's track and field.
