DETROIT -- The red-hot Houston Astros got 18 hits, reached base 27 times, loaded the bases in six innings and steamrolled the Detroit Tigers 12-3 in the opener of a four-game series Thursday night at Comerica Park.

The Astros (47-28) have won 11 games in a row, while the Tigers (32-43) snapped a three-game win streak.

Struggling Tigers right-hander Jose Ureña had another rough start, but he got little help from his defense and it was a sloppy game overall against a team for which there is no margin for error.

José Ureña retired the first four Astros on just seven pitches. Then things got tough. He needed 58 pitches to retire the next five.

Some of the problems were self-inflicted, like two walks (both runners scored) in the second and a hit batter that forced in a run in the third.

But second baseman Willi Castro also committed two errors and a base hit bounced off the glove of Willi Castro.

Incredibly, the Astros loaded the bases in the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. That they “only” had eights run to show for all those scoring opportunities might be considered a very dubious moral victor for the Tigers. But when they loaded the bases in the ninth against Tigers reliever Bryan Garcia, Yordan Alvarez launched a grand slam to the visiting bullpen in left-center.

Hinch had seen enough, putting shortstop Harold Castro on the mound for his third appearance of the season. Harold Castro walked two batters but maintained his 0.00 ERA and, in fact, was checked unironically by umpires for foreign substances at the conclusion of the inning.

Tigers center fielder Akil Baddoo, now batting lead-off, had a single and two doubles, extending his hitting streak to 11 games. (A line drive that seemed destined to be a third double was caught by left field Michael Brantley).

Another hot Tigers’ hitter, Jonathan Schoop, was robbed of his 16th home run by Brantley’s catch against the wall in the fifth inning.

The Tigers added a run in the bottom of the ninth, which didn’t affect the outcome but did push the final game time to a whopping 3 hours and 52 minutes.

Up next: The Tigers and Astros meet again on Friday at 7:10 p.m. Tigers right-hander Wily Peralta (0-1, 7.11 ERA) will face Astros left-hander Framber Valdez (4-0, 1.67).
