SAN FRANCISCO — Trevor Bauer was made for this.

In his first taste of the ancient blood feud that is the Dodgers-Giants rivalry, Bauer threw a career-high 126 pitches, allowed just one unearned run and two hits while protecting a narrow lead into the seventh inning then left to boos from Giants fans at Oracle Park – cupping one hand over his ear then throwing both arms in the air in classic wrestling heel fashion.

It took all Bauer had – and more – for the Dodgers to pin a 2-1 defeat on the Giants on Friday night.

“I mean, they’re gonna hate me anyway. So I might as well lean into it,” Bauer said of his theatrical exit in the seventh inning. “I like when the crowd is into it. It makes the moment feel bigger and I perform better in those moments. So it just feeds me.”

That didn’t surprise ‘frenemy’ Alex Wood – a teammate and friend of Bauer’s with the Cincinnati Reds in 2019.

“Do you expect anything else from Trevor?” Wood said. “Of course he’s going to lean into it.”

The first installment in this year’s chapter of the Dodgers-Giants rivalry came with an unexpected twist. It was the Giants who came into the game with the best record in baseball.

The Dodgers might not be looking up at them in the standings much longer. Friday night’s win was the Dodgers’ fifth in a row and ninth in their past 10 games, closing the gap rapidly. The Dodgers (27-18) are now just one game behind the Giants (28-17).

But round one was all about Bauer.

“Fans wanted to boo me so I wanted them to turn the volume up. If you’re going to boo me, then don’t … half-whatever. Just give it to me,” Bauer said.

“I have always done well in environments like that for the majority of my career. Well, I don’t want to say that. But for my early career, my high school and some of my college days, it was a negative environment towards me every time I pitched because it was coming from my own team. So I’m comfortable there. People have disliked me for a long time and people have tried to bully me. I’m comfortable there.”

Wood has been a big part of the Giants’ early success. His ERA sits at 1.93 after he worked around eight hits in six innings, allowing only a two-run home run to Chris Taylor in the third inning to damage it.

Bauer’s night was fraught with its own peril.

Brandon Belt dropped a bloop double down the left field line with two outs in the fourth inning. Bauer hit the outside corner with a 96 mph fastball on 0-and-2 to the next batter, Evan Longoria, and started toward the dugout. He stopped in his tracks when he realized home plate umpire Chris Guccione had not called it a strike.

“I don’t think you can execute a better pitch than that,” Bauer said. “I know it’s a strike. Will (Smith) knew it was a strike. I think everybody but the home plate umpire knew it was a strike.”

Bauer walked Longoria and threw a wild pitch to put runners at second and third before striking out Alex Dickerson to end the inning.

Two innings later, Bauer made his worst throw of the night.

After walking Mike Yastrzemski and Brandon Crawford to put the tying runs on base with one out, Bauer struck out Belt then got Longoria to bounce a ground ball back up the middle. Bauer knocked it down, collected the ball, gathered himself and made a soft throw to first base – or the general vicinity. The error allowed one run to score and extended the inning.

Dickerson flied out to end the inning with Bauer having thrown 113 pitches. Before the game, Roberts said he only had four relievers available – and one of them (Nate Jones) was collecting his baggage at SFO at the time, arriving at Oracle Park around 5 p.m. for the 6:45 p.m. start.

So Bauer went out for the seventh inning, walked a batter and struck out the next. His career-high 126th pitch was another 96 mph fastball to strike out Mike Tauchman. It was also his last pitch of the night.

“We needed him to go deep tonight, and he took that challenge, embraced it and left it all out there,” Roberts said.

“I just didn’t think the stuff was compromised at all. You could argue that the command wasn’t pinpoint. But I thought the stuff, pure stuff in the sixth inning was the best that he had all night.”

After the game, Bauer rejected the suggestion that he had left it all out there.

“Who said I emptied the tank?” he said to one question using that metaphor.

Bauer made his theatrical exit as Roberts called Jones in for his Dodgers debut.

“You know what – what do they say ‘Let the kids play?’” Roberts said of Bauer’s final act. “I think it’s the gamesmanship, the fun, the banter back and forth – he dishes it out and he can take it.”

Released by the Atlanta Braves last week and signed by the Dodgers, the 35-year-old Jones is a seasoned veteran with more than 300 big-league appearances under his belt (most with the Chicago White Sox).

Jones earned his airfare from Oklahoma City, retiring all five batters he faced (two on strikeouts) and allowing Roberts to hand the ball to Blake Treinen for the ninth inning (with closer Kenley Jansen unavailable).

“It felt great,” Roberts said of the raucous atmosphere even with just a limited-capacity crowd of 12,753 in the stands. “I think that this is really the first time going on the road and almost having a capacity stadium – obviously the rivalry and ‘Beat LA’ and ‘Let’s go Dodgers.’ It just felt like a real rivalry game and we haven’t had that in quite some time. It was fun.”
